Given that the eel still seems to have plenty of energy (catching him was not easy) I’ve decided to try and treat him. I do have a lot of antibiotics on hand so I will keep this thread updated on my progress, though to be honest I’m not very optimistic. Thank you everyone for the input.

As long as the infection stays below the vent (anus) you may have a shot at saving it. In the vent becomes involved, then peritonitis will set in and you should euthanize.

Good luck!

I began treatment with furan-2, kanaplex and metroplex yesterday. Checked on him today and he was upside down breathing heavily so I euthanized him. I really don’t think there was any way he could have survived, he was literally disintegrating in my hands when I removed him from the tank. I still don’t really know why or how this happened but here are some photos.

Sorry to hear that, sometimes we never know. Ive never seen the bumps before, but bacterial infectlons do end them pretty quickly.
