Hey reef fam,

I picked up 2 yellow tangs

Now one of them died and the other one I’ve got that’s still active and swimming, but its belly is sunken and it hasn’t been eating since I got it. The weird part is, it’s also the aggressive one chasing the others, even though it’s clearly losing weight.

So far I’ve tried:
  • Nori on a clip (soaked in garlic/Selcon)
  • Rubber banding nori to rock
  • Frozen brine and mysis
  • Spirulina pellets/flakes

  • Still no luck — it just won’t take food.
The parameters of the tank are all normal nothing out of wack

And the tank is 120g

Try macro algae. I had a picky one years ago, that's all he/she ate.

Were these shipped or purchased at LFS? Assuming LFS, did you see the store net them, as some can be aggressive with net. Additionally, These fish are recommended quarantine first.
How did you acclimate and for how long?
Is the one left breathing normal or labored?

I got the tangs from a fellow reefer who broke down his tank and just gave them to me. We used a net to catch them, and I drip acclimated them for about 2 hours before adding them to my tank. The one I’m worried about is breathing normally.

Did they get caught in the net?
Did you match salinity during acclimation with that in the tank?

What was the fellow reefer feeding? Hopefully you’re feeding the same? Every fish I’ve ever gotten I check what they’re feeding and have it on hand before receiving the fish. Then slowly switch them over to what I feed.

Also what size are they? My biota yellow tang from Dr. reef was tiny! So had to break food up very small. Even mysis! They have small mouths so possibly your feeding to large of foods also?

That’s exactly what I thought about I tried contacting him but he didn’t reply yet because I never thought about it but that’s a good point

How long have you had them? My yellow wouldn’t eat much for a week or so. Stressed out with new environment etc I’m sure. He only grazed.

My two 100% success rates on getting fish to eat TDO chroma boost and reef nutrition ROE (fish eggs). Hopefully it’s food selection and not anything more though.

I had them for exactly a week I got them Friday last week but I lost the first one yesterday I’m hoping that the one that’s left starts eating soon I’m hopping it’s just stress

My yellow tang from Biota won’t eat any pellets or fish food I put in. It only eat macro algae, any thing on a rock or anything that comes out of another fish’s butt. He’s fat and healthy. I’d try macro algae for sure. May need to overnight it at this point

I’ve got tons of macros. The booger still won’t eat any 🤣. He prefers spoon fed meals. He just now started eating nori after 4 months. Every fish is different. I have mix of about 20 foods frozen/dry on hand to try out. Eventually they’ll eat whatever. My biota flame angle just grazed for 3 weeks and just now is eating everything I feed.
