Last night I received an electrical shock while cleaning my affordable powerheads that rhyme with Bambo.

I tossed both of them in the trash and the Mrs. has officially greenlighted purchasing a proper DC flow pump.

I like SICCE because of the warranty, but I REALLY like the idea of one less power cord in the water column. The one warranty issue I had with a SICCE pump they went above and beyond to make it right.

Tunze makes nice stuff also, but not sure about their warranty.

Thoughts, ideas, opinions?

It would be great to have a piece of equipment that would last a long time.

How slow can the MP pumps go? I only have a 40 Breeder right now. But someday I would like to upgrade to something 100+ gallons.

Can I buy a MP40 and just throttle it all the way down without blowing my fish out of the tank?

Stay away from ecotech if you are looking for a good warranty. It has been over 1.5 years of at least 10 lame failed attempts by ecotech to diagnose and fix my defective radion lights remotely and now they want me to pay to send in my lights to have them inspected and repaired.

Thank you. I find that disheartening considering how much their lights cost.

Tunze is a VERY solid option that stands behind their product as well.

Tunze is great and have unreal warranty and support. Also look at Reef Octopus OctoPulse, they are amazing.

Depending on your tank you'd need OP2 or OP4. OP4 has insane flow reserved only to large tanks!

I like the aesthetic of no wires in the tank. Therefor the only options are Ecotech and the newer line of DMP model pumps from China.

You trade small piece of wire in the tank for a WART with a wire on your glass outside.

Reef Octopus Octo Pulse is far better option that at least has some directional adjustment.

Well worth the trade! Hence the popularity of Ecotech powerheads in the hobby.

I almost pulled the trigger on a DMP last night, but after almost wetting my pants from an electrical shock, I think I want to buy something from one of the major brands.

I thought about buying a reef octo with a Hydros wave controller ( I already have a small collective going). But I’m worried it would be overkill.

In the spirit of full disclosure: I’m still new to this hobby after a 30 year hiatus from a fish only tank.

All the gear options now boggles my mind.

Reef Octopus seems to me like a solid company. I like Tunze also, I REALLY like the idea of buying Tunze if their customer support and warranty are excellent.

Jecod/Jebao is a major brand though. They probably have one of if not the highest market share globally in return pumps and powerheads given their dominance in Asia. If you mean major western brand then yes they are not that. I personally run Vortech—haven’t tested the DMPs but would consider them if I was looking to save some money.

The Jecod DMPs are essentially ecotech without the brand name. They have been out for a couple of years and no one is complaining about reliability. And trust me, people would be complaining here if there were issues. Plus you can’t get a shock from them as they also have a dry side and wet side.

What worry’s me about the more affordable pumps is I notice when I plug the power into the controller, it sparks. Seeing sparks makes me think something isn’t right.

My AI hydras used to do that every single time. And those were $800 lights.

That is likely not an issue with the pump. That is more likely an issue with the surge protector or wall outlet!

Is ecotech worth it? It is to me but I've also had a clean bill of health on both of my radions and both of my MP40's. If any of those stopped working i'd gladly replace it with the same thing.
