Acans Receding!! Found this! Pest???

Hello everyone.. I've had some issues lately with my acans. For some reason they have started to receed slowly but I've already lost a 1 or 2. I read about this happening to many other people's acans but could never figure out if anyone ever found out what it was due to. All my params are within range only the mg was off for a couple days but I noticed it quickly and corrected it. So I've tried moving them around from higher light to less light with no noticeable changes. I can't seem to figure out what wrong. I believe it could be due to the fact that for the last couple months I no longer target feed but I'm not sure. I also keep sps, chalices and z/p all of which are doing fine so I dipped one of them in revive today to see if that helped and these two different worms came out I think the second might be a tubeworm but i'm not quite sure. Anyone know what they are?? and if the receding could be due to either of them? thanks

Are these acan lords or acan echinatas?

I have had a similar thing happening in my tank. I have had about 3 small mini colonies start to have a few polyps detach from the skeleton. Once I saw this I moved them to lower light and lower flow and did a did in Revive. Although none of them hae completely died, I have had some polyps fall off.

I am wondering if this could be contributed to the heat swings of the summer? I do not run a chiller and my temp can get around 82 F during the hotter days. I also know that all my params on in check.

I have lords mainly... I don't think it's the heat swings b/c I run a chiller and my tank is around 78 constantly but it could be why the polyps are detaching idk for sure but sometimes also this happens when you have low kh. what's your alk?


anybody? i'm thinking these are some type of enucid worm... anybody had similar probs before or experiences they'd like to share?

Nah.... Interceptor doesn't kill any worms fwiw... Well heart worms in dogs haha... Looks like a bristle worm of some sort maybe it was robbing it of food???

First one might be a Bristol worm. I have found Bristol worms to be negative in my opinion.

Check out my thread linked below. I have had all sorts of issues with acans. For sure those worms are a cause of acan recession in many cases. Most people just don't know the worm is living in the acans rock and the acan dies without the owner knowing what happened. When acans look unhappy I suggest fragging them. Not just to remove any decay that can cause a infection to set in but the process of fragging will expose other pests like those worms.

I can view through my clear bottom and I saw the worm

To the saw she goes and look almost right away a worm is cut in half

If you can't get it all out at least it will be cut in half

You should def check out my link. I've covered a bunch of acan issues. Def these worms are bad news, ime they are not common bristleworms. They have a different mouth. Good luck fragging :)

Another example...

Basically, these worms are eating your acans (maybe all lps) from the inside out. Its horrifying when you think about it. The acans can't move and because its a captive environment the chances of a natural predator are close to zero. Don't hesitate to frag. Worst case scenario you have overreacted and now your healthy frags will start growing babies faster than if you hadn't fragged. Its a win-win. Frag!!!!

btw I did read your thread I was kinda hoping you'd chime in :tongue:...Thanks for sharing those pics, kinda scare me how big they grow ! so do they constantly live inside the acan? I've never seen anything crawling like that crawling around.

were you ever able to eradicate them completely? by fragging? did you frag and then dip and/or quaratine them? I don't wanna loose all my acans:burn_joss_stick:

the body shape is odd with that weird cecum shaped middle part makes me think its some form of peanut worm, Alphas definitely look like bristle worms as i have battled with many bristles

Just found this old thread, ive been havingthe same issuses with a few blastos, which are very closes to my acans. Just curious if in anyones opinion could these worms spread to other corals?
