Box Of Crayons

Also water changes are MAJOR key!

I’ve been DIY dosing manganese and iron.

I’ve been trying to elevate manganese to very high levels as suggested in a study, Has anyone tried running high manganese?

I also experimented with running elevated magnesium in my auto water change bin.

Corals have great polyp extension, but colors are not great. I suspect high phosphate may be contributing to dull colors. I’m switching from AFR to Tropic Marin A and K. Ill report back if colors improve. I think do to my super high alk I should not use afr for trace elements.

Hey all, I feel my corals just encrust for months no growth tips or new branches… is that normal? I also think that my corals are a bit dull in color. We can get into my params in a bit but wanted to get the experts thoughts on what things have improved growth and coloration the most for you (after stability) 😁

There's a trick to make them encrust and a trick to make them branch I believe. Might have been Frank that told me?

I think it was cutting the frag off the plug and gluing it to the rock makes it base out and encrust more while elevating it off the rock some it will encrust the frag plug and a little bit of a base and then start going vertical and branching...?

@fishguy242 was that you?

@Fish Styx probably has some good ideas as well.

SBB (Shane) runs manganese for his Gonis but I'm not sure what levels.

Becky doses manganese (I think?) as part of the Reef Moonshiners. @Stang67 ?

Current size, numbers, full tank pics, lights?
running trates over 50 phos over 1.5 will inhibit slow but steady growth IME.

I do not see any excessive basing in any of those pictures. It is normal for them to at very least encrust the whole of the frag plug. I have also seen high alk slow things down.

Lighting and low ni po have caused mine to get going. Also feeding them the right stuff. Some stuff takes forever to start branching and just puddles. Flow maybe???

Thanks for all the replies!!

Walk of same, i mean… Params:

Chris meckly method.. cleared all bound up alk in jail now normalizing i wonder if that could be an issue

I have DMP blasting on too of all the acros no flesh gone. And dmp 20 on the other side 2mp 40 on the bare bottom

Also wonder if xr15 with reef brites might be too little coverage for acros.

Stable ? kinda where you want to be ,let the phos come up a little, near bottom, not good .05-.07 is ok,
watch the trates keep them below .50 steady ,go slow ,no more jumps.

I think that not cooking them may have helped you a bit through some of those ups and downs.
I think these have a lot to do with what you are seeing. Acros take some time to recover anytime anything swings. A little wandering is not too bad, but those are some pretty big swings.

I agree. Acro recovery is measured in months, IME. Another swing essentially resets the clock.

Fair, those charts are 4 months of data, but you guys are right i need to be more stable! Too much tinkering on the first year as to where i wanted to settle. Last month has been less changes and ive seen more growth. So ill wait a bit more!

I guess the only reason my acros have not quit on me with all those fluctuations is because of flatlining PH around 8.35 (as much as I can)

Before controlling PH I had some swings (my fault) and lost a lot of stuff, the difference now that everything keeps going is stable PH.

…. But this is anecdotal, sample size of 1, as an engineer.. I cant take it as valid scientific data 😂😂😂

Everyone who confuses correlation with causation eventually dies.
