if you are DONE with the dosing schedule (day 10) and you don't want residual Cipro in your tank you SHOULD do a water change. None of the treatments I have read about have called for leaving your tank to maintain any cipro after the dosing, but they have called for water changes after.I would do no water changes. I would hold off until you are finished with the treatment.Hi we’re doing the cipro treatment. Do you recommend to continue with our weekly water changes? We’re on day 5 of a 10 day treatment
The water change is to reduce effects of decay from corals. If the corals look good at the end of the treatment I don’t see any reason for a water change. Cipro breaks down from strong light which is why its recommended to dose at night. Your everyday day lighting will naturally cause the cipro to break down.if you are DONE with the dosing schedule (day 10) and you don't want residual Cipro in your tank you SHOULD do a water change. I agree that after treatment it would not hurt to do a water change I did, but the person I was responding to was still dosing and asked if they should do their normal weekly water change during dosing. Also as @VintageReefer said strong lighting is thought to break cipro down so the water change may not be needed to remove the cipro. I dont know if that is 100% true though @Randy Holmes-Farley posted something that showed cipro levels were not depleted after being run through a strong uv filter at least not as depleted as much as was thought it would.if you are DONE with the dosing schedule (day 10) and you don't want residual Cipro in your tank you SHOULD do a water change. There are many ways to dose it. I dont think a massive dose hurts anything. Someone on here doses an entire pill for 25g of volume I currently dont have exactly their way but post 7 in this thread has instructions linked that I used. I almost doubled the dose from that thread on my tank with no negatives. What is the dosage for the cipro?
Thanks .so u doubled the dose in post 7 ? No ill effects? There are many ways to dose it. I dont think a massive dose hurts anything. Correct. I saw nothing but good after. I also increased my dosing duration to 10 days. So basically doubled the actual amount required for my volume and doubled the duration. Thanks .so u doubled the dose in post 7 ? No ill effects?
So I have 600 gallons -liters 2271 x.125 ÷10 cam out to like 35 MLS per dose and I would double it to around 70mls evey other day for 10 days ..im getting that green bacteria on the sand and rocks and its eating away at the lps flesh all around the rim .seams like a bacteria .im gonna give it a shotCorrect. I did it for what was believed specifically BJD. I am not sure how well it works on what I think you are saying is cyanobacteria. It may work I am just not sure. Cyano is a weird creature. Have you tried increasing the flow to the area affected and siphoning it out? I am not a chemist or biologist I think cipro is more effective on gram negative bacteria. Typically Cyano is treated with a erythromycin based treatment which is a gram positive antibiotic. Both are a more broad spectrum and do affect some of the other bacteria that they are not specifically designed to. I'm not going to lie I am a bit in the weeds on this.So I have 600 gallons -liters 2271 x.125 ÷10 cam out to like 35 MLS per dose and I would double it to around 70mls evey other day for 10 days ..im getting that green bacteria on the sand and rocks and its eating away at the lps flesh all around the rim .seams like a bacteria .im gonna give it a shot
No I had no issues after dosing. I did not dose bacteria. I did not test after for ammonia but I did notice a slight decrease in nitrates for a couple weeks afterward. I have no exact knowledge as to why, I changed nothing other than dosing cipro. My guess is it is possible that the bacterial load was reduced and its possible corals were able to uptake more ammonia causing lower nitrates....idk just a guess. I will say while things looked much better after dosing cipro I still have reoccurring issues about every 4 months, just torches though.Did you guys have to dose bacteria bottle after treatment? I am having BJD in my system after introducing some new torches recently. At first when Iost some of the new torches, I didn't think much of them even though they had a foul smell. Then I lost large healthy torches that been in the system long term. I am on my 4th day, after 3 doses. Even after the intial first dose, all my remaining torches opened right up and looked healthier. Today, they're all very happy looking. I plan to do 6 days treatment but wonder if I should ease of nightly dosing and go every other night so i don't kill off the good bacteria.
Reoccurring as in BJD reoccurring? Did you buy new corals and introduced into your system during that time?No I had no issues after dosing. I did not dose bacteria. Nothing new since the frogspawn that brought in bjd back in February. Yes BJD. I dose cipro, last time it was a very large extended dose, things recover, grow new heads and a few months later it starts again. Just in the torches. They all have new heads and great flesh bands and a week later its all dead or back to just a sick head or two. Dose cipro they recover and start to regrow. IDK what is causing it youd think the bjd if that is what it is would be gone by now.Reoccurring as in BDJ reoccurring? Did you buy new corals and introduced into your system during that time?
Thanks for the info. I have a torch heavy reef tank. This is the first time I've encountered BJD. My system is still only a year old. I do have hammers, frogspawns, and and gonis in my system but none have shown BJD so far but some gonis do appear unhappy prior to treatment. So far, after 3 days, they look very happy during treatment including including a goni thats been closed up for 2 months starting to open.Nothing new since the frogspawn that brought in bjd back in February. Yeah I dont know why but they do seem to like the effects of cipro. Thanks for the info. I have a torch heavy reef tank. This is the first time I've encountered BJD.
