Question for you... As your Monti Cap continues to grow new layers upward and shades the lower ones, how do you plan on dealing with that? Just let it go and see what happens? Is it worth the effort to try and selectively remove newly forming pieces to prevent continued upward growth?

The idea is soon to frag some off soon. It's a big shade spot underneath!

That fuge light looks pretty powerful. What bulb are you running?

I think it's a 20 watt LED grow bulb from Walmart. Works very well.

Might have to give it a go. Putting 2 Vipars over my 120. I replaced 4 of the 6500ks with 20k and 3 of the blues with 395s. Changes the lenses out to 120 deg on all except for the outer-most leds (those left at 90), but it still seems to hotspot in the middle.

Pulling the lenses helped a great deal for shadowing. Still a great deal of power to hit around 100 par at sand bed.

I'm not one to like the 3500k and 6500k diodes for the reasons of the tank looking more "yellow". I went heavy on 20000k and 14000k diodes to replace the 3500 and 6500.

Yeah same. Vipars have 6x6500k and 6x14000k. I wanted more blue so I dropped in the 20k's, but decided to leave some 6500s to fill in the spectrum.

Your tank convinced me that I don't need a $800 light to have a beautiful tank. With Reef-pi to control ramping, I have all the functionality and power I need. Plus, I can do my own "warranty" work if/when led's or drivers go out. Can't beat that for $200.

There are many different ways to have a successful reef. Once the basics are set, time and consistency can lead to success.

In this discussion, providing the proper spectrum of light, at the proper intensity is in my book "basics".

Doesn't take a ton of money to achieve. Plenty of people blame their tank issues on lights. Many times it has little to do with them or it's a lack of understanding, "basics".

Water change done for the week. Finally bought another heater this weekend to replace a older unit. It had been sporadic turning on at times. Needed to go.

I did see a aptasia and one majano in the system. I guess it's kalk paste time again. I have been very successful killing them this way, but once you have them, most likely will always have some. Peppermint s are out of the question. They in the past have destroyed LPS in my tank. No more.

Granddaughters Betta tank is my other responsibility. Looking good.

The biggest toadstool has to come out soon. It's base is massive! If I frag it, I'd have enough toadstool material to supply all tanks in North America!
