Going Tyree LE...soon

This hole high price coral thing has really turned me off from buying lately I just dont get why people are willing to pay it. Dont get me wrong I own a bunch of high end corals but the prices just keep going up its started at $200 corals and has just kept going up to crazy amounts of money. I dont mind paying good money for things I like no matter what name is on it but its got crazy. What would of been $200 is now $300+. IMO its killing the hobby with all the over charging. I understand that they have to make a living in these tough times but no reason for this.

I totally agree it's silly that putting someone's name on a coral raises it's value. I don't know how much Tyree contributes to the hobby but I sure hope he's doing something besides raising prices.

well fwiw the reason I pay for certain higher priced coral is because I know other people are willing to pay a high price as well. It sort of justifies buying it for me because admittedly a lot of the tyree/LE corals are nicer...and knowing I can make my money back by selling off frags of it as it grows makes it easier for me to part with the initial investment. But yea I definitely agree certain vendors/users way overprice their items...ticks me off a little but I'm not one to start an argument over it...even though I REALLY want to post in some of their for sale threads lol

Here is a dirty little secret, to get a coral stamped tyree, YOU HAVE TO SEND HIM A FREE PIECE. Essentially he is getting a free piece of a nice frag and slapping a name on it. I agree with the posters above who said tyree used to mean so much more a few years back than today. I always admired the way he grew them out and fragged them in a sustainable way as not to endanger the mother colony. I was also proud of the fact that you were getting an aquacultured piece and not fresh out of the ocean. Now it seems vendors send him free stuff to get named and jack up the prices. Oh well, at least I am not alone in feeling this way.

The one thing ima say here is.... Tyree used to be special to me I still love the old school tyree sticks some of the nicest around..,, any more I think it's just who's friends with who...:sad: I personally don't like everything being tagged soon to be tyree yada yada yada it doesn't mean anything to me any more... Like I said at one point and time it had it's purpose.... Nowa days it's nothing more than a tag..... Sucks to I almost feel like he's getting a bad rap for it....

+1 with the overuse of the name, it no longer means what it used to. It's sad that greed watered down the brand.

as far I know ora still practices sustainable aquaculture....and either way their pieces aren't anywhere near as expensive as tyree/jason fox pieces.

Because ORA are quality proven corals. They take the time and grow out hundreds of the coral is question before slapping a name on it. On my opinion, ORA has the best sps available. Yes, there are nicer corals that cone in wild, but holding their color is extremely hard, even for expert reef keepers.

What originally started all of this bashing of Tyree?

Why do people hate his ways of reefing/buisness,but they are fine with (Example) Reefer #45475945, starting a buisness and selling corals in even a lesser natural manner. Im say less natural in a sense of, Reefer #"....." gets a coral,2 days later chops it,2 days later sells out of their frags. ---for the same or more money?

Why are public threads not posted about them? Why did Tyree become the target?

I'm glad this thread hasn't been closed down yet. But on the real...i am not blaming tyree for anything but lending his name to vendors. I know that he doesn't fix the price of what they sell it for. They do that on their own..if it's such a nice piece and holds it's colors why not just jack the price up and keep selling it how you were doing all along. Why is the name tyree needed to do that? And if he is getting a free frag of the coral, how long does he look at this thing before giving his approval? I'm sure not long enough to grow to where he could frag it, let alone see if it will really hold its color.

I don't think Tyree is the target of this thread, it is vendors using the name to jack prices up. Coral is hypothetically 100 bucks then gets named tyree and it is 300 bucks a week later for the same coral. Then people just started talking about tyree and how his LE corals have gone down hill recently. Another thing I loved about the old tyree pieces (and some of the new ones) he let the price be set at auction. Instead of people just pulling a price out of their rear end, he let the market set the price. Some vendors just seem to put the same price on all their corals regardless of the actual coral.

If you want a good laugh pull up the LE page for the miami hurricane, the first piece sold at auction for like $265, and now you can hardly give the thing away.

you all have a vote...its called dollars...how you spend and where you spend it...that is the ticket. FWIW...i still think ORA pieces give you the BEST bang for your buck at the end of the day, and guess what...that is where everyone is going to spend their money...best bang for the buck.. I plunked down 200.00 and got 6 awesome ORA pieces from my LFS that I ordered from ORA. Now, I happen to live about an 1 hour from ORA and my LFS does a lot of businesses w/them..they would not sell me one of the pieces I asked for b/c they did not think it would make it and the other frags they had were too small...so instead they gave me a frag they have not even released to the public yet (although from the size of the frag i got i am sure it won't be too long before they do).

I have bought the old school stuff from Tyree too, and those old pieces are like ORA pieces...not over priced, hold their color, and enough generations removed from the seed that they fare well in captivity.

but this is a hobby, and if you deal with "vendors" they are in this to turn a profit..so keep that in mind. Having said that, there is nothing sweeter than getting a good deal on a piece or colony that is not named and just looks banging in your tank once it starts to color up...isn't that what we all want at the end of the day!!!

btw I am cherry picking someone's frag tank tomorrow who is moving!!!!!! HA@@@!!!

I do miss the auction aswell. That made it more interesting to see just how much a coral really was worth,since the price was strictlt based off of interested buyers.

What's funny is there is no such thing as tyree le lol it's reef farmers that's steves company, everyone calls it tyree though ;)

I gotta agree with Lee on this. When Steve was super selective on his stuff, it mattered, and the price could be justified coming from Steve (nobody else, though).

Now it seems vendors are "lending" Steve coral to put his name on it. Sounds like a bargain to me... Send me some crazy stuff and I'll stamp it Ronnie LE!!!! :D

It really sucks man I always wanted a tyree piece that was my own... I prolly had a few back in the day but didn't consider them le since I saw them every day... I mean really how cool would have it been to get one of your pieces with the tyree stamp in it's prime????"way cool IMHO" today I don't feel like that since half my stuff meets or exceeds today's standards...:sad:
