Gyre peninsula aquarium

I'm looking at getting a gyre Wave Maker for my Peninsula Aquarium I tried 2 power heads on both sides of the Overflow on the end and it's just not giving me the flow I like. I was thinking of doing a gyre right underneath the Overflow and blowing it across the tank since this is a peninsula tank any thoughts and any recommendations on a good gyre wave maker? I've been looking at the ice cap versions not too crazy expensive but seemed good

Sorry, but underneath the OF is probably not going to work.

The purpose of the OF is to draw in the surface water of the tank and all the organics and fine particulates at the surface into the OF and down to the sump. In other words, the OF 'skims' the DT surface.

If you place the gyre right beneath it, it will prevent the surface water from entering the OF. You will effectively be preventing the junk you want out of the DT from ever entering the OF.

A different option may be placing a gyre vertical in one of the back corners to create a flow that goes toward the front along one side of the peninsula and back toward the back on the other.

Or, two gyres both placed vertical — one in each back corner — that would provide the same flow but in alternating directions.

I did think of doing them vertical on each side of the Overflow really just didn't want to have to buy two though any thoughts on what brands would be good and not too pricey

Agree with @malacoda ... the junk you want to get through the weir and go down the overflow, you don't want to blow it away.

I had pricy IceCap Gyres in my 150 that had an internet connection. Drive me crazy. Now I use three (3) simply Hygger units that cost about $75 a pop, and need no dopey 'software.'

I did see the hyger models are they loud? They seemed nice for the price

My whole system is loud because I run it that way-- mad scientist style, sound of water rushing through the system (lol)-- but those Gyres themselves seem silent if underwater; meaning not being used to break the surface, as I have one of the 3 doing. They are different prices depending g on size (flow rate), but you should get one off Amazon and try it out. It is always a useful piece of equipment to have on hand to aerate water, even if for some reason you decide not to buy more. I do think you will like it, though.

Peninsula tanks are tough. I have a 5 foot peninsula as well. I am currently running two XF350s mounted vertically on the overflow side, with two IceCap pumps mounted horizontally underneath the overflow. On the opposite side, I am running two XF350s horizontally near the top, with two MP10s underneath.

The tank is drilled for a closed loop system. I just need to get around to plumbing that in.



I would highly recommend the Maxspects. The initial WiFi setup can be a bit confusing the first time, but beyond that they have been excellent pumps. In my opinion, the IceCaps are weak for a 5' tank, I would shy away from them if you can.
