I can’t quarantine my clownfish and currently have a 15-gallon reef tank with ich. The tank includes:

1. A clownfish

2. Some macroalgae

3. A mangrove tree

4. Live rock and sand

I understand the macroalgae may not survive, but I’m confident the mangrove should be unaffected. Would using hyposalinity in this tank effectively remove ich from the system and help my clownfish? I have a Hanna salinity checker so I would sure the have the exact salinity that’s required. Thankful for all the help I can get

#fishmedic

It will cure it but will kill any inverts (snails, crabs, shrimp, etc) Mangrove will be fine they are normally brackish. Macro might be okay as well.

Tagging medics they may want to see pictures of fish to confirm ich diagnosis

If done successfully will it remove the ich from my dp system as well or just cure the fish? I don’t have any snails, crabs etc,

If done correctly it should kill the ich from the system. Most people cannot perform hypo in their display tank as it kills other life that dont want to die (inverts/corals)

Ive seen too many clowns Not do well with hypo as hypo can be stressful to fish. Y can use or tub or rubbermaid container bur for clowns, coppersafe is best leaving the display running without fish for 45-60 days

The mangrove will be fine in hypo. the live rock and sand will lose some micro fauna diversity, and the macroalgae may die, but hypo is effective at eliminating ich. Here is a post about that:

I finished hypo not too long ago with no deaths except for a jumper. Fish didn't seem to notice if I am being honest. My clowns were spawning in hypo.. ha!

Main thing is if you have a lot of bristle worms or micro brittles etc.. they will die and effect water quality.

I would verify your salinity checker with a second one. It's accuracy is +/- 0.001 which is enough to get hypo wrong.

It should work. The macro algae should probably be removed to another container - (to be careful - left for 6 weeks without fish) - and then you can put it back in the tank - it should be fine in a sunny location. But - definitely take it out - btw - the mangrove would also be fine - in a jar - and I would tend to separate them rather than trying the hypo salinity. One think you dont want is dead plants causing more problems
