Good evening,

I recently noticed that there is ich on my trigger and grouper. The tank (300 gallons) has only been up and running for about 8 months, and so far the only inhabitants are the trigger, grouper, a banana eel and a banded cat shark. I am removing the grouper and the trigger and treating in copper power. My question is if I do not plan on putting the fish back in the tank, do I need to treat for ich still? From what I read online, eels and sharks are mostly immune to the effects of ich, but can still be a carrier. If I plan on only doing sharks and eels in my tank in the future, would they be okay as is? The shark is still eating like a pig and the eel will eat every week or so (typical eel hunger strikes).

Thank you!

Yes the tank will still have ick. Either treat them all and go fallow for 78+ days in the tank or manage the ich with UV sterilizer and good cleaning and keep everyone feeding.

My mixed reef has ich, I manage it. Only shows up in one of my tangs after I ad a new fish or an extended power outage. When something stresses the fish out big time. I generally feed heavier, ad garlic powder and ginger to their foods and I have documented what each fish seems to prefer to eat so I make sure that is more in the mix to keep whatever fish has it feed and strength up.

So if I did not treat for ich and just let it ride, would it negatively affect the shark and eel? I am more than fine with doing only sharks and eels in the future, but not if the ich will affect them too

I have had a ell and shark but 20 years ago, so I cant say with confidence either way.

That would be something to research and weigh your options.

Now being a FOWLR you may be able to treat the tank for the ich. There is multiple options you can purchase.
I have not used any since I run a reef tank.

I was trying to do some research and found most medications will have negative effects and sharks and eels. If the ich will not affect them, I’d rather just do a species only tank

I have a porcupine puffer in my tank and know copper is not good for them, probably the same with your eel and shark.

He is another reason I will never be able to get rid of the ich from my mixed reef.

I have toyed with adding a snowflake eel and cat shark to my tank eventually. My tank is 96x30x24 so I have plenty of footprint. Was thinking to rescape the tank as the rock in a large center mountain allowing tons of sand bed for it.

Have pictures of your tank and shark?

I know it would be probably a nightmare in a mixed reef but I like doing things wrong and making it work.
