just curious.......since you are taking on the relm of colored sticks.....
what are your alk and calcium parameters at?
what test kits are you using for them?
what are you dosing into your tank to keep the levels stable, and how often?

sand bed will clear up after our frag swap on the 29th... YAY!!! :D
the Mummy Eye has put on some weight and has growing steady since I got it... the Aussie Scolly did lose some color but it's still pretty vibrant.. I hope the new lighting will help with the colors... :)
I've never tested for anything in my tank really... I just look at the corals to see if they're happy or not.. I do however do a 10%-20% waterchange every 2-4 weeks, depending on how much time I have...
here's my dosing regimen on the first page of this thread... :)
Weekly Routine
Monday: Reef Plus by Seachem (2 capfuls)
Tuesday: Enjoy the tank...
Wednesday: Reef Calcium w/ RO water (1 spoonful); after 1+ hr(s) Reef Builder w/ RO water (1/2 spoonful);
---------- also, Magnesium supp (Kent Marine Tech M) (2 capfuls)
Thursday: Enjoy the tank...
Friday: Reef Plus by Seachem (2 capfuls)
Saturday: Enjoy the tank...
Sunday: Enjoy the tank...
Repeat the week... oh yeah, around 3rd or 4th week of the month, I replace the Monday or Friday dosing w/ 15%-20% water change.. I use RO water and Reef Crystals... I feed my tank Mysis, Enriched Brine, and Formula 1 alternating days once a day.. and whenever I remember, I feed frozen cyclopeeze... lastly, I don't have a skimmer...

i would go buy 2 test kits, just to see where you are at since you are putting a couple of colored sticks in there now.
i recomend the salifert KH/Alk test kit,

....its something that is a good idea to have on hand anyways in case of an accidental overdose or corals unhappy, etc.
but i wouldnt want you to change your dosing scheme any time soon......ya know, if it aint broken......dont fix it or change it!!
just find out where your levels are currently, as a baseline to see if what you are dosing is adequate. b/c its likely that once those colored sticks start growing, your levels will drop slightly, and you'll have to dose more per week than what you are currently dosing to keep those levels up.
although, with just a couple of colored sticks.......it shouldn't make that much of a difference. but ya never know, still a good idea to have a baseline to know where you are at.

just want to document that I downgraded from a DE pendant to a SE pendant on 09-28-07... so far so good... :)
still need to install the (2) 24" T-5's for actinics.. for dawn and dusk effect..

250w.. right now I just have my spare 15k XM's but I purchase 20k Radiums but my EVC electronic ballast is not firing for some reason... I plan on purchasing a 20k XM bulb soon if can't figure out what's going on with the Radiums...

Not that you asked, but I'm not as impressed with my 20K SE XM as I could be. As I've told others, I have a 14K DE Hami on my basement tank, and the colors pop a lot more out of that then they do out of the 20K XM. I'm still looking for my perfect lamp.

I think Azurel used the 14k Hammie's as well so I'll ask his input on them.. :)
I've never used the hammies, but I have used the XM 20ks and the Radiums. I used the XMs for a couple of years and I LOVED them. I tried the XM 15Ks and they weren't to bad, but nothing like the 20Ks. I recently switched to the radiums a few months ago and they are even better. I hear people talk about them and I must say that the hype is true. They are great bulbs for color. All of these bulbs were used on 250w Icecap ballasts.
That being said, I plan to use a 400w Radium 20k bulb over my new 30x30. Good luck getting the bulbs to work. once you get them going you won't regret it..

hey marv, don't purchase new bulbs......purchase a new icecap ballast instead.
the radium bulb is finecky since its german made.....there are ballasts out there that just wont fire it due to igniter issues.....but the cheaper electronic ballasts as well.
icecap ballast all the way. ;)
but, if you are gonna give up on the radium bulb.....you could always send it to me to make sure its working....lol ;)

dont get an icecap for the T5's. icecap ballasts overdrive T5 bulbs like crazy, severely depleting their life.
people do this so they can keep corals that need that more intensity, but the downside is having to replace bulbs every couple of months.
for your applications, an over driven actinic bulb is not needed, esspecially with the radium already being very high in PAR.
just get a run of the mill ARO electronic ballast for the T5's and save some money on the ballast, and with less bulb changes.
thats what i'm gonna do on my tank.....no need for the overdriven T5's.
