Checked water quality last night and I am really pleased. My phosphates are down to .07 and Nitrates are down to 10. Woo-hoo. The shrooms are spreading out like I havnt seen yet and it makes you feel a lot better when you can see your coral are happy. One question I have, for anyone that has used the phosban, or maby it's phosguard, I cant remember, the white pellets you can just throw in a bag in a high flow area. lol. One you get your levels low enough, the container says to remove it and add once it starts creaping up again. Does anyone have any experience to say how long that typically is?

I decided that I wanted to add a sump. So with the help of one of Jim, lanaandjim on the forum, this is the result, also replaced the biocube skimmer with a HOB Red Sea Prizm Skimmer. I have the spot to add rock from my other tanks for a refugium as well where I plan on adding chaeto. Just made a homemade overflow and it is silent!!! I couldn't be happier.

Very cool Daniel. How does that overflow work? Never seen one done that way before.

I'll have to post a pic of it tomorrow, its pretty sweet. Jim was the one behind that. He knows his plumbing. It works awesome. Starts back in its own after starting back the return, the way it should, lol.

Here is the design we got online. We used 3/4 in and a 2 in to go around the stick in the water.

Hopefully going to do a mod on the red sea tonight to help with the skimming. I've seen good things about the mod.

I have to build one of these for my nano sump I want to add. I am just not quite getting the full design of it however.
Not seeing how the overflow tube itself is built.....
Sorry for the hijack

What do you mean, the pic is basically everything as far as parts go. As long as keep the water level like it shows in the pic by the down loop and the t it will work.

Thanks, but the pic to me doesn't show how it is attached or hung in the tank....doesn't show how the overflow is drilled or cut....doesn't show the details.
I'll see if I can find more info on the web.
Thanks for the great thread

I dont get how the 2 tubes are connected. Is there some kind of collar or did you have to do a manual job on a coupling/cap? On the bottom you could have gone with a plug instead of a cap to make it less bulky. Is the air valve attached to an aqua lifter (or similar) to clear trapped air?

I get how it works but don't you pull a full siphon with this set-up? With the drain so far down in the tank, if the return fails aren't you going to empty the tank down to the drain? Or is this a risk that is acceptable? I don't run a sump so I'm just curious.

OK, so what I did was used a cap on both ends of the 2" piece and on the top cap, you drill the hole so that the 3/4" PVC fits tightly in the tube so that its is adjustable.

I didn't use the air valve. The 2" drain on top skims the top of the water, dropping it down to be sucked up by the 3/4" piece. You start the siphon by sucking on the tall piece standing straight up. When you turn off the return, it drains down to just under the slits in the 2" cap. The only water left is what is below the t in the lower loop. Once the return is turned back on, the falling water will fill up the first tube causing the water below the t to rise as well. Once it falls down from the t, gravity takes care of the rest while the tall price allows for air. Does that make sense?

There is a cap on the bottom of the 2" price so the water will only go down as far as the top caps slits will allow.
