Hey Guys,

Just stoked that I finally got a pretty decent pic of my Potter's Angel (have had him for about 3 months now), and with my iPhone of all things.

This is the first pic he's actually stood still long enough for me to capture the detail of his stripes and color patterns (lines are more purple in person)... too bad my Flame Wrasse decided to hog some of the picture.

PottersAngel3-21-1.jpg

Some quick background if you're interested... When I saw him in the LFS he was fat and alert, but not eating. So against my better judgment, I broke the cardinal rule of purchasing a fish that isn't eating (since the other factors of him being fat and active and looking otherwise completely healthy) because I'd never seen a Potter's Angel quite like this one... his striping and colors were just so distinct and vibrant.

I then put him in my QT (my old 60 gallon tank) with some live rock to see if I could entice him to eat. I first tried live brine shrimp... he would come up to it, but then would turn away at the last minute. I then tried mysis and other frozen food soaked in garlic... no dice. I even tried rubberbanding a garlic-soaked scallop on a piece of LR... nope. So finally after a couple of days of me not seeing him eat, I figured, "Well, dwarf angels tend to graze in the wild- not eating from the water column- why don't I drop some garlic soaked pellets in there for the day and see if they're gone when I get home from work?". Voila!!! The same day the pellets were gone... although I had other fish in QT, so I couldn't guarantee that he was the one eating them. But then the next day when I was dropping the pellets in, he apparently put two and two together and finally started seeing items in the water column as a food source. From that point on, he's been a pig. So I quarantined him for the first 6 or so weeks treating with Cupramine then Prazipro in the last week before introduction into the DT. During the QT, he ate mainly NLS pellets and some Prime Reef frozen food here and there. Now that he's been in my DT for over a month, he now eats NLS/Formula 1/Formula 2 pellets, vitamin enriched brine shrimp, mysis, Prime Reef, and a Angelfish/Butterflyfish/Omninvore frozen mixture in addition to grazing on the rocks (although his favorite is still pellets).

Just wanted to share...

Thanks,

Chad

Beautiful fish

Very nice fish!

Awesome fish, always loved them.

Thanks Guys!

I'm definitely a proud papa... just hope he stays with me a long time as I've read that they don't typically fare well in captivity. He is EXTREMELY fat (kind of hard to tell in the pic), but given that I do at least 3 feedings per day of a mixture of frozen/pellets, I think he's getting a great variety of nutritious food (what I think is the main culprit for their early demise).

I'll be crossing my fingers and doing as much as I can in the mean time to keep him thriving.

Thanks,

Chad

Great story. I also just got a beautiful one on Thursday. He was eating at the lfs, but not so in my QT. I tried bits of Ova, mysis, cyclop ezee . I have 10+ lbs of good love rock, so he can graze if he wants to. There is even some sponge on some of the pieces. This morning he was at the top of the tank and not hiding in the rocks, so I was a little worried.

Great looking fish! Breaking the cardinal rule isn't so bad when you quarantine your fish properly, excellent job! Is he the only angel that you have in the aquarium?

Do you have him in a reef tank? I'm considering a potters, but don't want my SPS collection to nibbled on.

I currently have one, and had a pair in the past (( lost them when the main pump died when I was in the hospital )), never had issues with them and SPS.
The pair I had;

They will nibble on sps... polyps. Damage to the actual coral not so much but you will almost always lose PE or have less at the least. Beautiful fish tho!

Never noticed any loss of SPS PE -- can still see the PE on the pictures above.

Your right, the 1st pic doesn't look like they are getting ready to nibble at all lol

You will still have PE.... it just isn't nearly what it could/ should be with angels in the tank... I thought the same thing until the day after my flame angel was no longer in the tank. ;)

Gorgeous fish, and excellent work QTing him!

All angels will nip here and there, some more than others for sure. In nature SPS polyps are only fully open at night, when they feed. If the coral shows a bit less PE extension during the day it's no harm to the coral. Feed angels often, and don't put them in a tank with a bunch of frags. IF they are nibblers, frags will not survive the assault.
