Hi sorry for a totally newbie question but I purchased a full setup used that was meant to include live rock that had various corals attached. Sadly they broke the tank down a few days before delivering it to me so I am assuming all the corals died despite them saying they will “be fine in the bucket of salt water”

Anyway so as soon as I got the tank I got water in it and put the rock in the tank in no particular way but hoped that it would give anything the best chance to live.

The only thing with any colour on it is these purple things. I am not sure if they are dead/dying corals or just putty residue? I just wanted to check before I actually start to Aquascape the rock as I wouldn’t want to kill anything that still has a chance.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the replies it was more when I scape the rock I didn’t want to accidentally cover up something that might still have chance.

Do you think I can just go ahead and chip these purple bits off then? Assuming it’s putty residue?

I wouldn't bother. In no time it will be covered in different forms of algae. You will never see it again after that.

The purple looks like epoxy (used to "glue" things together). As far as the rest of your post, it sounds like you got scammed. Corals do indeed survive in just water for a few days (they're shipped all the time). Unless this person was just absolutely careless and killed all the corals while breaking down the tank, it sounds to me like they found a separate buyer for the corals and made some extra $$$.

Differences in color on your rock will create interest visually in your scape before you get it Coraline covered. How long was the tank up prior to you purchasing it?

Did Any of the corals survive ?

Thanks when sorting my scape I won’t worry about the purple epoxy bits then.

The tank was set up for a few years before I bought it. I don’t think any of the corals did survive tbh unless these are parts of some coral? I’m totally new to marine after being a freshwater keeper for years but even so the coral that was meant to be alive were Zoas and I certainly can’t see any of those .

Tbf the corals were really just going to be a bonus rather than the reason I bought this set up. I paid £350 for a aqua one 300 with cabinets sump etc. Protein skimmer, return pump, lights heaters etc. The light is a v2 illuminair 900. And a bunch of rock all delivered to me. Even if it isn’t alive and I need to cure it looking at the prices of dry rock alone put me off starting from scratch .

Please excuse the dirty pictures normally I would have the tank all cleaned, set up and aquascaped but due to work commitments and an interview to prep for I’ve only had chance to get everything in the water and make sure it’s all water tight etc so far.

For a tank that has been set up for years that Rick looks pretty clean

It does seem like you were scammed theres no coralline on the rock let alone coral I would bet that rock sat in a tub for a short period of time before being shipped. Or that the system was really young when they stripped it down. You would at the very least have skeletons (LPS SPS) or blobs of rotten flesh (softies nems) if the corals died in transit.

Thanks for the help guys. I’m not too worried if there aren’t any corals I still think I got a pretty good deal.

I’m guessing since there isn’t any live corals it’s ok to have the lights off during the cycle?

Tbh right now I still like the novelty of the tank so will probably just have the lights on for a few hours while I’m home if there aren’t any corals to support.

That would be fine except for the fact that if you do happen to have any corals that you don’t notice or anything photosynthesis it will then definitely die without the lights

So update! I have noticed these on one of my rocks. After some googling I think they are protopalys rather than Zoa’s? Sorry for the crap pics they are small!

I also read that most people seem to not like them in their tank and remove them? They grow like crazy or something and kill zoa’s?

Yes those are some type of zoa or poly. They do need light but that’s only if you want to keep them. I agree that rock is only months old not years. Who cares though as long as it’s alive. Just be careful if they had copper running which I doubt but possible.

Thanks I have decided to go with the light on periodically to try and get some algae blooms out of the way etc.

I guess it benefits if it keeps these alive. I hope as they get bigger they colour up a little bit because they are pretty boring right now
