It's been 4 years since the Gen 6 - you'd think we would be seeing something new from Ecotech

Some hobbyist and aquaculture still prefer the G4's...
I loved my gen 4's, but how many years can they work? I remember people saying they were only good for something like 10,000 hours? IDK I stayed away from the technical talk because I didn't have the tools.

Some companies provide life expectancy of products. Take Kessil for example. In their general FAQ they have a section entitled 'what is the lifespan of my light'. In there they note 35,000 hours and the general conditions to meet that.

Basically it is hard to say how long they will last because part of the answer lies with the hobbyist. How we turn them on, off, how long are they on for the day, evening, and duration of the intensity. Then there is the care factor. Are we keeping them clean. Fans, surface, under, etc.

All these things will vary among us and why Bob's may last 1 year and Sally's last 8.

I'll add one more note - some pieces of hardware do not necessarily need frequent re-designs like an automobile. I understand why some may but in my opinion it isn't always warranted. Maybe this is something Ecotech is pondering now along with product material. Or maybe it is just a by product of Aperture consolidation.

Me - no idea. I'm still running SKY's so I am the wrong person to ask.

The figure I used was one that I saw on Reef Central back when Radions first came out. I remember people were saying they couldn't possibly last 10,000 hours and others were saying longer.
I do know there are tons of people still using gen 4's.

Gen 7 will be interesting.
My first Radions were XR15 gen 5 blues. All were bought used for around $330ish each with mount.
I purchased 5. 3 are on my 50 and one on my 15 currently with one spare.
I will run these until they die, lol.
I run ab+, the reason I bought them, on all systems including 4 on my old 80. Similar growth vs my old T5 systems.

I have always wondered why people say they are not as good as the gen 4. Old lfs ran all gen 4 radions, like 30+, I setup my 80 with 4 gen 5's and most frags came from the gen 4 systems.
Prior I was running halides.
Gen 5 grew just as well as the gen 4 from my observations.
Current 15g running a gen 5 blue and ab+ @ 80%. Not sure what light could do any better than this gen 5 blue does, well maybe the gen 7, lol.

Gen 4 XR15s being controlled via a web browser using a reef link was my light choice for several years. I ran lights and vortechs both. I needed to add some new powerheads and ecotech stated the new ones only work on mobius. So I upgraded all ecotech devices to Mobius. That was easy enough until I found out Mobius has a problem keeping track of the correct date and time and I had lights turning on in the middle of the night. Ecotech failed to correct the issue and years later I still have to go in a few times a week and sync the date and time so the powerheads are running the schedule correctly. My radions are shelved and vortechs are gradually being replaced as they fail.
The date time issue is random and doesn't affect everyone but it is real and ecotechs failure to address it has pushed me away from supporting them. Supports fix was to sync the date and time when it looses track. Not the resolution I was hoping for.
Fortunately there are enough reliable products on the market that I do not need ecotech to enjoy the hobby.

This is what mobius does on a regular basis. Doesn't matter of I use it on Android or IOS. Also only using Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi was step backwards IMO. Its fun stuff still having vortechs running on 3 tanks.

I wish they would at least change it so it's honest and states Mobius's time is incorrect because my device time has never been out of sync, the app is.

If light wavelengths and par are any indication, over on humble fish someone with a spectrometer and par meter took measurements of their gen4s brand new and then measured the something like 5-6 years later to reveal that there was little to no color shifts and intensity change.

I think the biggest concern is having LEDs burn out and replacing them with equal or better components. With gen4s void of 'close to" UV LEDs I haven't had any LEDs burn out like the lower spectrum ones on my gen 5s. My Gen4s still grow coral and are considered the Toyota compared to my Gen 5s and 6s.

They're the bullet proof version of the radions. The argument can easily be made that despite spectrum changes and 2 options (pro and blue) anything after Gen4s was simply appealing to the desire of having something new every few years. Trying to bring in that apple phone approach to the reefing world. I suspect that if ecotech kept the private company status, we'd be somewhere in the gen 9 era right about now.

I would not be running them if they did that. I have gen 5's and have never had an issue.
That's the mystery. Why do some have no issues while others do.
If I had your issues I would not be running mine.

I know it's no consolation for you, but Aperture recently pushed out a very promising update to the Experts community that seems very promising that fixed the time shift issue.

I was told in confidence by a previous owners that they finally was able to put their finger on the cause of the issue. I'll leave out the specifics but at least waking up to lights on full blast when getting a drink of water in the middle of the night will be a thing of the past. Definitely a case of too little, too late for many...

Without divulging too much, it had to do with other equipment shared on mobius and how they interact with each other.

I need to pick up a XR30 and have been stalling to see if the gen 7 is anymore than a wish for many.
My wish would be for a new gen would be similar to the new tech introduced when the gen 1's first came out with ESL.
Something never seen before type.

Hello,
I didn't want to open a new topic, I want to ask something, I would be very glad if you could help.
i started using radion light for the first time, i'm using g6 pro,
in the country where I live, people have a belief not to increase uv above 40%, I've experienced this myself in domestic brands, but g6 programs are usually 100% uv Has anyone had a lens problem or led problem with the use of 100% uv in g6 and did it cause problems?

I'm superstitious and I wouldn't max UV out

I also tested the UV channel on my Hydra 68s and going from 40% to 100%

a.) i didn't notice any visible difference whatsoever on corals
b.) negligible difference in PAR - i'm talking maybe 5-10 par at the most variation - it wasn't a significant contributor.

Why even run the risk?

I’ve been using my XR15 G4s since 2018 in few aquariums, my actual project is dominated by Acropora corals. 12 hours of light per day for 8 years adds up to 35,040 hours of use.

When I measure the spectrum and output with ParWise (2 months ago), they’re still good. I check also with my Apex PAR meter and don’t see any changes.

I keep the Acropora at around 350–380 PAR using also 4x T5 setup. All channels are at 100% except for white, red, and green, which don’t exceed 15%, and UV, which doesn’t exceed 50%. From 11am to 11pm with 5h of t5.

For now, they're working fine. I'm waiting for the G7 or considering another brand in two years' time; I don't like the G5 or G6...

Just casually dropping a tank of the month over here where you've got acros doing extremely well and a candycane over there also crushing it.

That isn't always easy to balance because of the difference in lighting requirements
