Hi

Curious how long others think a tang memory can typically last. Recently added two new tangs last week (chocolate and a tomini) and all my current tangs accepted them for the most part (some bodying up which I consider normal) except my whitetail bristle that was internally going out its way just to strike and do damage. After 3 day have finally been able to catch it and now have it down in my sump. Sure enough shortly after. The two left the corner they were afraid to move from and are now swimming with the rest of the tang pack.

I plan to attempt a try and reintroduce after a period of time hopefully after a timeframe long enough for it to reset and think he is new. but wondering what others think when it comes to memory. Right now thinking at least a 1-2 months in solitary confinement should be sufficient but I Can keep him down there longer if consensus is longer. There is nothing in the main compartments of my sump so he has plenty of room to swim around and be down there for an extend period of time if needed.

It may just take some time, especially if the bristletooth has been in there longer.
Also, did you add the new tangs after lights out? Sometimes that is a better plan.

I don't think its "memory" really matters. They will lash out against other tangs even if they know/ or don't know that it's the same tang. Plus it might not be memory but phermones or whatever in the water, although I think Tangs take visual cues very well.

I would just introduce them next time with the mirror trick. Always seems to work well for me.

Aware of every trick in the book when it come to adding tangs lol. The white tail was a more recent add not one of my older tangs. I have 12 unique species of tang currently, 3 of which are some of the most aggressive tangs typically mentioned on these forms (clown, purple , powder blue) all peacefully living together as well as. I think this was strictly a terriorial defense. He only attacked them if they tried to swim around the rock work and was completely unphased as long as they swam in the corners. This is I why I’m asking more about a memory reset. Hoping I can get it to forget the tank layout and feel uncomfortable when added back. If it was pheromone I would have expected at least 1 or two of the others to retaliate the same way. Fully agree they take to visual cue. Despite all being different species They all school as one and why I think aggression is minimal in my tank. I think collectively as long as most accept a new add the rest shortly after accept as well and mellow out

rearrange a bit of your rock work

My rocks are cemented together. Also while this solution is effective it is an option I would no longer entertain even if the rocks were not, simply given how many different tangs species I currently have. Last thing I need happening is dislodging others from there home in the process and kick starting fights among others 11.
Will be introducing the white tale back on Friday. Can see a change in behavior after a month of isolation so will see what happen.

Reporting back on this one. Added whitetail back two nights ago. Got slapped around my PBR the first night but everything calm cool and collect the next morning. WT had 0 interest in the chocolate or tomini so 1 month of prison time seemed to do the trick.
