would it be a good idea to get the leopards as the first fish in a newly cycled tank so they control the environment?
It depends on who you talk to - some people will say yes, others say it’s not ideal.

I’ve done both methods, the best way has always been sooner but not when it’s brand new, freshly cycled, instead it’s when the life has started to truly take hold - fanworms, bristleworm, various other species appear and coralline starts showing. If you lack that - especially the worm side of it, I’d hold off putting in Macros/Anampses and instead look more to Cirrhialbrus/Paracheilinus.

My experience with a harem of tamarins was 6 red tails. Eventually the females turned male one by one. I could always tell because once the male started really going after one of the females you could see her turning. I’d move that female (not easy) then after a while another would turn.

I have 2 male meleagris leopards in my 240. They have been getting along in this strange bro-mance for a few years. I want to get a couple female bipartitus. With the 2 males in the tank now would that keep the new females from turning male?

Just because they’re not in my 5 foot, doesn’t mean I don’t have them 😉
Check this girl out.

It may reduce the likelihood of the females turning however it may increase the chances of the males not getting along unless you intend to add 8-10 females. I’d keep the female:male ratio much higher than you think you need to for it to work, it will disperse any potential aggression much further and the males won’t feel as big of a need to fight until it becomes one or the other.

That's exactly what my concern is. Disturbing the peace.
I'm surprised at how long this has been going on .
Now if I could only find a group of small females for less than $200 each.

Then there would be the physical space in the tank for that many new fish.
It's a 240, but even that size has limits.

Hmmm, new plan,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

$200 for a meleagris???

New plan;
Bigger tank!!! There’s always room, maybe just remove the couch?

the only place I've used for fish lately is a well know vendor for quarantined fish. ( best warranty I've seen lately)
In the past I've used other vendors and the mortality rate was very high on shipped leopards.
I had one almost dead vendor shipped multiple shipments to fill the original order of 6.

New tank would have to be in a new life without my present married status intact.

Every so often out here in AZ we have a LFS that sells female meleagris for $35-$45 each. Unfortunately it's limit 1. I think they're $79-$89 for each additional.

Some more iffy wrasse photos. I’m now down to 3 wrasses as I decided to sell on my biocellatus as he was too boisterous and I’d like to replace my iridis with possibly a pair or trio in the future.

You know the wrasse addiction… even without the tank running with fish, I’m still here trying to work out a plan for what I want. So far I’m thinking harems/‘pairs’ of wrasses rather than keeping one of multiple different species.

So question about earmuff wrasse... how big do they really get? I see some sites saying max 6" and some saying 10"... I have a 180G... currently with a few tangs, 4 clownfish, timor wrasse, yellow wrasse, rhomboid wrasse and radiant wrasse... the timor is the largest at around 4" ..

Really like the look of the earmuffs.. just want to make sure he stays betweeen 4-6" max lol.. If I pick up a 2.5" earmuffs, how long will it take for him to get to that max length?

Probably similar to the babi that I have. Purchased around 1.5” and now almost 4” at 3 years. I couldn’t imagine either of those hitting 10”.

Great! That is really good size for 3 years.. I dont want him to get huge..

I had a 2" xmas wrasse that grew to 5" in about 9 months.

Curious how big your tank is?
