Turtle's Fairy Tale

Is it a colorful new tank? Any updates there?

Oh yea that too... it's in Columbia, so about a half hour away from me. I have a voicemail on my phone from when I was sleeping I need to check. Yay, night shift. I have a feeling its the shipping company.

Ok, if 1 more thing goes wrong (joke, you would have to Mr T me to get me in a plane) I will fly over there just to kick you in the nuts whilst you're down! :p

Really tho... I think that Murphy guy has been squatting in my shop out back.

Slightly more opened trachy photo

I am with you with working nights, although I usually get home by 3am. Still crappy when receiving shipped items. My tank should be here Friday or early next week.

Shrimp are evil... guess I have an evil refugium overlord for when I get my tank set back up. Contemplating putting him in the display tho.

Yes, both of his claws grew back, again. So far no fighting with the snowflake eel.

Nice. Sometimes they grow back when they are molting.

The first time when he lost one of his claws fighting with the powerhead, it grew back in the next molt. The second time he lost both of his claws fighting with the snowflake. They both grew back in this last molt.

So, I have a question for my loyal minions. Yes, that's all y'all. Robin, I mean, we need more flow in this tank. We're sticking with the gyre pumps, but the Icecap cannot control more than one pump. We want to have gyre A on for X minutes, then gyre B on for X minutes, then maybe gyre A and B on for X minutes. Anyway, from what I understand, the Maxspect controller can do this. My question is, 230s(2300gph) or 250s(5300gph)?

I run a pair of 250's on my 187g and wish I had gone with the 280's. I end up with the 250's at 80% and I would rather have the larger pumps at a lower speed. Based on this, I would get the 250's if I were you.

The Maxspect controller can do that, and it is nice only needing one to control 2 pumps. It also has some pretty nice built in random flow modes that seem to work well.

I have dual 230’s on my Reefer which is 36x22x21 and I’m only able to run at a high of 40% alternating pumps or the LPS just get crushed. I killed a torch or two pushing too high.

Now I know your in a 90 Cube (30x24x24 I think) but based on the dimensions and branch rock scape I think the 230’s will be plenty for a mixed reef. I know your focus is SPS but that Trachy and the Acan’s my not agree with super high flow and finding a spot with protection may prove tricky because of the open branches. The 250’s can certainly be run at a lower speed and it’s always nice to have more than less if needed but I’m not sure you’ll need that extra giddy up.

As far as sound goes. My couch is about 8 feet from the tank and I do hear that unmistakable sound at 40% but I’m close and its nearly muted by the television. At 60/70% I think it would probably bother me at this distance. Take that into consideration as it relates to your layout.

Crud... not sure why I was thinking it was a 4' tank.

With a 30" tank I agree that the 230's would be more than enough.

edit: Then again, I'm not sure I would even use gyre's on a 30" tank. Seems like a great application for MP40's.

Thanks guys. The actual dimensions are 36x24x24. It's 12" short of a 120(there's a 😂 joke in there). I think I'll go with the 230s. The top half of the tank will be SPS, eventually... but the bottom of the tank will be loaded with LPS like this guy.

Yep, it's open. Surprise #2 is floating. Back to sleep for another hour or two. Hopefully the tank shows up on time today and not 2.5 hours late like last time.

I know you folks all like the Gyree's . I have a mp40 on a 48" tank and at 80% that alone will satisfy the system. I am also looking at one of these @225, a lot less than the ecotech.
