Hey guys,

I’m getting an approximately 3.5” tang next week and I’m setting up qt for it. I have either a 20 gal or my old 50 gal display I could use as a temporary qt tank. But then I thought about my ato reservoir that’s attached to my sump…. It’s 18” by 12”, holds about 20-30 gallons. Could I slap a HOB, heater, and small wave pump in there and use that as my qt tank? Lol it’s just very conveniently located, but I wasn’t sure if there was concerns of any medications crossing over since it’s connected to my display. I assume it’s fine, but thought I should check first

I wouldn't want any medications in my sump, if you use the ato chamber in the future there may be copper remnants etc.

From what I've read airborne transmission is possible so its recommended to keep QT tanks a certain distance from all other tanks. I want to say 10ft but really I'm not sure. @Jay Hemdal what are your thoughts?

EDIT: I wouldn't worry about contaminating the container as it can easily be cleaned. I've used live rock treated with copper after removal media.

I agree - a sump in place would be too close to the main system (although below it) that I'd be worried about cross-contamination. I like to see five feet or more horizontal distance between displays and quarantine tanks. Ten feet obviously works as well.....

Thanks for the input everyone! Decided to just use my 20 gal and set it up in a different room so there’s no chance of things going wrong👍
