Nice is easy!
Its knowing when to give someone chocolate or cheese before they ask for it. Life is always better with chocolate or cheese.
Unless your allergic, then i truly feel for you.
You can’t please everybody all the time there is always disagreement in life plus now a days people are more sensitive than the way it was long ago. Parents basically want to wrap their kids in bubble wrap god forbid feelings get hurt

Why do we see so many posts in the Emergency threads, and many are not a problem to begin with ...

Maybe, at least in my case, I should just stay away from the forum, because I find all these newbie questions irritating ...
In this era of electronic data, why is it so difficult to do a Google search, instead of wasting all the space on this site with repeat questions?

This is where the 'not so nice' starts ...
These “newbies” are asking for help HERE because there is many experience people and experts alike. GOOGLE often gives mixed results that can sometimes be COMPLETELY false. So if questions like that annoy you then yes, I agree you should stay away from a reefing forum that’s main goal is to help people and to be nice. That’s my .02

Also I can sometimes be called mean because I’m very direct and don’t sugar coat things. But I’m not doing it on purpose and Im CERTAINLY not doing it out of annoyance because of a “newbie” question.

A friend of mine who is an MD said once when he was doing a consult he during training - how a stupid intern had asked a stupid question. His mentor - a famous MD said 'If they are asking a question - its not to annoy anyone - its because they don't know - if you know the answer - help'

YES!!! This is so true! Why not help! It takes maybe 2 minutes but can save the person lots of hassle and time of their own!!

Very simple everyone in personal and business relationships, being in business 25+ years, just apply this.

Treat others as you would like to be treated.

On this website, members of different walks of life, from different cultures, nationalities.......
For some English not main language, this and many other things, we need to apply what I mentioned on treating everyone.

If you don’t offer chocolate or cheese then a not-nice person will just help themself. ;Bored

Ive been not nice on here before due to alcohol consumption and not meaning to be mean, but having sarcastic sense of humor.

I think other times people don't like getting too deep into topics and get heated in discussions Generally I think the discussions are good, but only if people can stay cool.

Welcome to the club. Yeah, I've been called mean... and lots of other things with similar meanings in less family friendly terms. It's not true, really... I'm not mean, I'm direct, opinionated, and don't believe in political correctness. You say something parroted from popular culture without being able to back it up, and I'll jump right down your throat. No hard feelings... consider it constructive criticism :)

Imagine how boring the world would be if we all agreed on everything. <shudder>

Nothing wrong with disagreeing. Being dismissive of someone else? Ok, that's not nice.

So.. someone posting a poll regarding quarantining, with the following poll choices: 1) I quarantine everything, or 2) I don't care if my fish die

That's not nice. Yes, there was a poll like that on here a while back. Dismissive. Yeah, I had a problem with it.

I see that sort of thing from time to time. Someone so convinced that their way is 'right' as to completely disregard anyone who doesn't agree with them.

Actual mean spirited posts? You're an idiot, please get out of the hobby, you don't deserve (whatever)… I don't see much of that around here.

Guy with a used 29g tank and a HOB penguin filter tends to get dismissed... I was quite successful keeping marine fishes alive for decades using gear like that, or even less advanced than that. Just because it's not your style, doesn't mean it's wrong. Give the guy a little credit for at least trying.

Oh, and all youse guido's on the tang police squad... keep it to yourself :D
Well put my friend!

I'm pretty sure my initial posts have been slammed enough by now ... and many think I'm a big jerk because of them.
I try my best to be 'welcoming' and although I may sometimes come across as abrasive, I try to be helpful when needed.

I think I made my point that it's not difficult for posts to be misconstrued as 'not nice', although I may have gone over the top to show it.

Let's all try to do our best to be friendly towards each other and keep this community helpful and worthwhile

Thanks MnFish1
Just trying to keep the conversation alive, and alleviate the Hate on me !!
I for one do not hate you. I was generally talking about your posts in this thread specifically and not you in general. I don't think there is one person who hasn't had a bad day, post something they regret or didn't mean in a certain tone. Trust me, I've had plenty of bad days here and issued quite a few apolagies through PM. I can be very sarcastic and blunt and it's hard to understand if you don't know me. We are all a family here just trying to help, including you.

Makes me think of a quote (source disputable) I've seen memes on that's been in my mind lately. "I am only responsible for what I say, not what you understand." Now there's a lot of people who are going to look at that and re-quote it as something good because it alleviates them of any personal responsibility in their communications. And I've seen agreement with that statement in some prominent psychology postings and such. I have to say, I disagree completely with that sentiment. I do absolutely believe we have a responsibility to try our best to make sure our words and intents are understood. Why the heck are we saying them in the first place. In the Navy when you gave someone an order, they repeated it back to make sure it was understood by both parties. The best posters on here are not necessarily those with the most knowledge or experience. It's the ones that are patiently ensuring their ideas and advice is understood and accepted.
