Why Are You Here???

I love this hobby mainly because even though I live in Florida, I'm too busy to spend my life underwater. (Trust me, I would if I could!) School and work consume my life. I wish I lived closer to the water so I could just run there and dive in, but I've got a 20 min drive, then park, then dive in. Just doesn't happen as often as I wish. aka why I keep all the tanks. LOL

For me you are walking a fine line with telling somebody how much they can profit. Without getting political sounds like an old Eastern Bloc Country.

You got it all twisted,I am not telling nobody what they can or cant do Im just stating my opinion, whether you agree with it or not is what this is about.

Not only that, you don't want to squash someones desire and drive to be successful. The guy selling frags out of his basement may be the next Unique Corals or other major retailer for us.

I have to say, I am in this hobby for the pure love of watching my fish and corals flourish. I love the beauty of most coral, specifically zoas and palys. The SPS too, when you can see them growing and branching out and expanding, it is pretty rewarding, and when mine get to a point that they need to be trimmed back, yes I will frag some, give some away and maybe sell some. BUT…I have never sold and never will sell a single polyp frag and I have never sold a frag for more than $15.00, including SPS, LPS and some higher end zoas. I’ve given away or traded any zoas I had frags of. I may have paid 50.00 for a polyp of something and a month later have 5 or 6 polyps I just can’t see charging so much for something that grows so fast and is not rare! Like Hornets! It’s just like my flower gardens, when the bulbs multiply and they have to be thinned out, instead of throwing them away, I would rather give them to someone that will enjoy them. I have given away more coral than I have sold. I do not actively advertise selling coral. I do mostly giving and trading with people I know.
OH, I forgot, I have to be honest, someone offered me $20 for a mushroom once, but it was in trade and I was spending a hundred + on some coral from them so it was really in trade.

Really Paul???Dream crushing???Come on now bro I think your taking it a bit too far and need to read the original post again;)

I sorta understand what your saying. But some of us enjoy our corals and can maybe only afford a polyp keeping in mind you can make your money back while keeping a beautiful reef tank. Plus it helps me get by with the wife if I can sorry dont worry Ill make it back. Now I have a nice colony of Red Hornets and I dont mean what people call colonies these days with 5 polyps I mean a real colony lol. I paid 180 for that polyp, I enjoy making people smile and hooking people up so when I do frag a few I sell them locally for 75 a polyp which I think is killer. Although I am not in this hobby for a career if I had a colony of Sopranos or something like that yes I would sell them for max profit why? No one has them I know 3 people who does in the US maybe more but I dont know them. Certain corals will always be rare like the Sopranos theyve been around a while and have a respectable reputation. This new stuff coming in I think is ridiculously priced because you can establish rarity in 1 day now 2 years from now if noone has got anymore thats different. Thats my .02 cents worth lol

that is exactly what you are saying here: "Getting your money back is one thing but to just see a coral as a money machine as a hobbyist and not a vendor is another;)" That unless you're a vendor you should not be able to profit from the coral.

Im not cleaning no coral up and adding money to rebuild it, that was a bad analogy:(

you bought something, put time and effort/money into it (food, lights, clean water, water changes, etc) and sold it for a profit.

Seems like a pretty valid analogy to me :nerd:

If you're simply of the opinion "I don't like when anyone makes money out of this hobby/sells for profit," then I'll stop playing devils advocate, but as of yet you're implying there's a deeper reason to it, and I''m just trying to find that reason

I did read it already. I thought you wanted opinions. That just happens to be mine. I was with you in the OP for the first 2 sentences and then was like "what?"

You know whats really gets my boxers in a wad? Where the heck has the colonies gone I HATE when people by a single polyp and frag the baby before its even mature. Let the dab gum thing grow a little I thought we fragged colonies now we frag frags and that goes for vendor or hobbiest

Im not looking down on a guy who is trying to support their career or hobby but there are some folks who are obviously just buying these pieces with profit in mind.

This is exactly what Im talkin about.

I was with you on your "devil's advocate" reply also and then you lost me on the "walking a fine line" and "discouraging others"

I understand that part. To steal Jordan's line; the thing that got my boxers in a wad is, that is exactly what a vendor does. Just because he calls himself a vendor shouldn't make it anymore acceptable in my eyes.

True,I agree.

some situations are okay though like if your electric is getting turned off or your car repoed or being sued for not paying your CC sure if its a life changing event then you gotta do what you gotta do. But if you can afford a couple thousand dollar shipment you should be able to pay your bills

Errr....so now vendor's shouldn't look to buy pieces for resale? This confuses me, cause if they didn't do this, we'd all pretty soon not have anything interesting.

And I thought the OP was talking about profit and buying corals to resale them, it didn't say anything about unhealthy fragging practices, so my apologies if that's what this was about. I hope you understand my confusion considering the OP and the thread title.

OK my boxers are in a wad again...

If my car is getting repossessed or I'm not paying my credit card bills then either my priorities are severely twisted or I fell on hard times. Either way, I'm shutting the reef down and paying my bills that feed my family, put a roof over our head, or keep me in the car that gets me to work.
