So I've had a fairly large montipora setosa for about 6 months. I have it under ATI T5's and it has good flow. The color is really good. My problem is it just doesn't grow. I can't figure out why. All my other montis have good growth.

Any advice?

Frag it! Seriously. Cut a lil frag from several of the branches. This will encourage growth.

What are your tank parameters? Make sure that your Calcium, Alkalinity and Magnesium are all at appropriate levels and in balance.

I would check my magnesium and calcium levels. Also, you said you have a t-5 fixture, how high is the setosa placed? I have mine in the top 1/3 of my tank and it seems to be growing nicely.

sounds normal to me... always been a real slow grower for me...

+1

From what I've read and experienced it's one of the slower growing Montis, but it should be growing some or something it wrong.

Mine grows pretty fast actually. Check parameters, something may be stunting it.

My parameters are all good. Do you think there may be faster and slow growing setosa? I have it under pretty high light but it doesn't seem to mind.

Actually the setosa is one of the fastest growing montis I've ever owned, and many report the same. The orenji on the other hand is painfully slow. If its the real tyree one it should grow rather quick once settled. Keep in mind there have been a ton of recent imports that look really similar....

My setosa is a pretty slow grower for me. I have it under 8x54W T5's in the top 1/4 of the tank. I've fragged it a few times, but still a slow grower IMO.

It's a fairly slow grower for me as well. I'd say it's the slowest of all the montis I have including rainbow, superman, sunset, pokerstar, undata, and jedi mind trick (and of course montipora capricornis)

I agree with the fragging response!! I had my piece for a while and was always a slow grower and pretty sensitive to water conditions and surrounds corals in the beginning. Once it adapted it started growing very well....i accidently broke of a few pieces and the thing has exploded in growth lately.

It seems the growth rate of this monti is as polarzing as the tunze/vortech debate. I love the color of this coral, by price, at least for a monti, it seems it may be a slow grower.

All my monties literally grow 10 times as fast as my setosa. A year and a half ago I got frags of 4 different monies all about a 1 square inch. The setosa has hardly grown at all in that time and the others have grown to be huge colonies. I've tried moving it to different areas of the tank and different conditions but nothing seems to help.

it took mine a while but now it is encrusting nicely on the rockwork. Sometimes when corals are in dormit, you can cut a small snip off of the piece and it can kick it back into heterosis. Just make sure you don't end up with too small of a setosa frag when you do this.
