Mp40, worth it?

I have two mp40’s and they’re FINE. It’s like having that car that it works perfect but there is nothing to enjoy. That said. I just purchased an ORCA and…. Yeah. It’s worth the bang for the buck.

@serval sorry im going to split off reply to get rid of the weird amazon associate thing.

I just toss a dime size dab right on the base of the magnet where it slides over the shaft. It lubes the shaft a bit and lubes the magnet and forms a little barrier to keep tiny snails and such out. Its food grade and ive never had an issue with it even when a little gets into the tank ive watched my tangs try and take bites of it.

I have 6 mp40s. I will be replacing them with something else as they fail. I'm tired of bearing failures on dry sides that have not been dropped. I also have mp10s and wet side magnets are splitting so I'm pretty much fed up with vortechs in general. I suppose if you can find used ones that aren't noisy and don't have cracked magnets and they're cheap enough maybe?
Granted mine have been running for years but for the price they should run as long as my old Tunze that was a fraction of the price and still going strong after 10 years. IMO the only thing they offer is no wires in the tank. They're are still wires visible running on the outside glass. No adjustment for flow direction can also be an issue. If they were half the price I may consider them.
I would look into the jebao knock offs if no wires in the tank is a must. I have one but i stuck it behind the rocks to try to keep detritus out and I haven't touched it since adding it 6-8 month ago. Mine has an external control which TBH I don't mind because I don't fiddle with flow very often anyway. Its still spinning but that's all I can say about it because i haven't touched it since i added it to the display.
This may not be a problem for everyone but i get a lot of little critters like limpets and asterinas that reproduce in my tank. Recently I've been having problems with those critters finding a way into the MPs then causing a loud clicking noise that requires the wetside be cleaned. This happens weekly at times. I do not have the problem with powerheads that do not sit against the glass like the mp wetside.
Yeah I’m looking at the jebaos. As of now I don’t really care about the wires as I can just get cheaper ones and then down the line maybe upgrade to mp40s for cleaner look. Can save the money and use it for other things. A power head is a power head as long as it moved water. I think their main selling point is the app and wires but whats difference in using app and controller if your right there. Unless your not home

Are the mp40s really worth it. I know that’s like the standard wave maker that everyone has nowadays. I currently have gyres but tired of cleaning them so much and literally takes me house to scrub every nook and cranny. Are the mp40s worth the price tag? I’ve spent so much on gear recently not sure if I want to spend more yet lol
worth the price? Not full retail.

However they move a lot of water. If you go that direction, definitely purchase a spare wet side (i know, it’s expensive) to swap out when they get dirty. Less wear on them and worry.

I’ve had mp10s and mp40s. They last a long time, no rust, no split magnet. I clean them when needed in citric acid. I’ve sold the 10s when I needed the 40. I have replacement wet sides to switch out when cleaning. The only pumps I’ve ran in the DT for years.

how long do you soak in citric?

I've got 4x MP40s that I bought new when I set the system up as I wanted to try and get 'the best' where I could afford to for this tank and honestly for the price (around $800-ish AUD each when not on sale currently), I don't consider them anything amazing and wouldn't necessarily recommend them or rush to purchase them again. Since owning I've often wondered how they've become so revered in the hobby to demand such a price tag.

Yes, they can certainly move a lot of water, but unless you have a lot of SPS, need to move some serious water (ie. from one end of a peninsula to another), really value the use of the app for some reason or can pick it up cheap I wouldn't bother.

I've personally found them a bit frustrating in that especially when new or have just been cleaned the fan shields like to spin themselves off leaving the fan open to potentially mince or slice any fish that happened to get close enough. It was so bad early on I had to use a couple drops of coral glue to try secure them and stop it from happening. Even now, 2.5 years on, if I do a thorough clean it's almost certain 1-2 of them still unwind themselves within the following couple of days and need to be fitted again (despite ensuring they've been seated and twisted in properly).
I've also had random issues where after repositioning after a clean, it takes several attempts/twists or whatever of the wet side to try and get the magnets to re-align properly with the dry side for the fan to start up again. This has to be done when the unit is off too because if you align it incorrectly when it's on (or happen to bump it to misalign it enough during cleaning the glass) the dry side likes to vibrate and bash/bounce against the glass.

For a bit of a TLDR List;
Pros:
- Capable of moving a lot of water and providing strong flow
- App is easy to use and offers a few different flow options, including scheduled flow changes or even pairing of units so that they work in tandem with one another to create different flow types.
- Easy to pull apart and put back together to thoroughly clean without having to remove wires.
- Offers replaceable parts (ie. wet side)

Cons:
- Overinflated pricing
- Parts are overpriced (looked at getting extension cables so I could put controllers all in the cabinet on one side, and they wanted to charge a ridiculous amount for it, somewhere around $200 AUD each for memory). Even the wet side can cost as much as a full pump set up from Jebao or whatever.
- Shield can spin itself off, even when it has been seated properly.
- Dry side will bounce itself against glass if you happen to knock it enough that the magnets misalign (ie. when cleaning the glass) whilst operational.
