rtparty’s NYOS 440

Tank finally cleared up from the coral snow dose and the water is super clear. Sand looks 100x better as well

Current pic plus a picture of what’s been on the sand:

Coral snow plus cleaning = perfection 👍

Absolutely gutted right now….

Kasa strips can not be trusted for dosing pumps!! It’s my fault trusting a WiFi device even though I’m not sure if it was WiFi or what but it dumped a gallon of AFR into the tank sometime in the last couple days.

Multiple SPS frags are toast and the Pearlberry might be one 😢

Trying to get water ready for some large changes as alkalinity is above 16dkh currently

I ended up changing somewhere between 30-35g last night and will change another 25-30g tomorrow. Nothing else went bone white overnight but I’m not sure how many pieces will recover long term.

What’s “funny” is there are a few pieces (the old tried and true corals) that are all fine and not showing any signs of harm. Green milli, bonsai, blue tort, etc. They are the same corals that have loved the switch back to halides as well. I’d say 60-70% of the “LED corals” have not transitioned well. Like they just aren’t healthy enough to handle any changes. I think I’ll make a post later with my thoughts….

Anyway, the next step is the Kasa strips are coming off and my Apex Pro that I was going to sell will be put on this system instead. My mistake for trusting a WiFi device that requires WiFi connection to work.

Silver lining is everything was still a frag and I can get more from Sunnyside Corals. Except the Pearlberry. That one stings the most

I’ve had the same happen with Kasa plugs. I will only use them for non essentials. You can help avoid it by putting multiple off commands so that if it misses one, hopefully the next one works. I cringe when I read people using them for dosers etc.

Dang-it!! I hate when the unexpected happens! Look at it this way, at least you weren’t 3-4 years in and this happened. Can you imagine how devastating it would be to lose a bunch of large colonies. Hang in there, you have a wonderful setup and a great deal of knowledge. You will bounce back

Ended up changing another 25% or so on Friday night. Haven’t tested any parameters except salinity as I was getting a bunch of precipitation on the glass and pumps. That seems to have stopped at this point.

Only a couple corals are showing any signs of stress and I think both are going to make it. Time will tell. One odd observation is brown corals have all started changing colors back to what they were before the switch to halides. Most are just starting the change with the classic green first.

Oh yeah, I have been dosing 20ml of phosphate every day or every other as I remember. This equals out to roughly .02ppm for my system. Besides the system chewing through phosphate, I figured the large water changes would also be depleting any PO4 in the water. So I added it back 😂

In some better news….I finally got this installed and completed. Probably could have utilized the space better though. Might have to swap some things around to fit the doser in somewhere

Started with some initial spots but found the door didn’t open with the Apex brain on the right so it had to move far left. I will move the far left Tunze controller holder to the right and likely place the doser there

I put less important pieces on the inside along with power bricks so they are neat and out of the way

And here it is in place. There is an EB832 and EB4 behind it. I spent a lot of time trying to make the cords all accessible for easy cleaning. I’ll grab a pic later

Nothing too crazy to report. Corals are still showing serious signs of stress from the whole ordeal. Multiple of them are now shedding skin

I’ve got alkalinity back down to 10dkh and will let it fall naturally at this point. I also tested nitrate and phosphate today.

Alkalinity: 10dkh
Nitrate: 1ppm
Phosphate: 0
Temperature: 75°
Salinity: 35ppt

In some better news I think I’ve got flow dialed in now with a couple Tunze 6075s. I’ve got 3 Tunze 6095 I need to sell now. 2 are brand new with zero use Boxes haven’t even been opened. I just used the one open 6095 to play around with positions and flow rates

Control board looks great man!
I'm sorry to hear about the KASA power strip incident. That's a bummer, but you will pull through it even better!
Did you get around to getting a PAR map of your tank with just the halides on?

I haven’t done it yet. I’m in a rut with the tank and hobby. 2 more corals STN’d this week and I’m just done.

Tank will likely be FOWLR plus whatever corals do pull through

Get them nitrates and phosphates up.. any time I have a Stn event I up my phosphates and it stops.. I’m currently running my phosphates at .3 and the sticks look great and no more Stn.

I’m dosing .05ppm a day of phosphate currently plus ammonia. My glass is green within 2 days

I think the damage has been done

Been shopping around and the NYOS 440 seems to fit the bill. Love your build so far. Question, are you gonna switch to an automatic fleece roller? If so what have you seen that will fit? I haven’t been able to get dimensions on the sock chamber. Are you able to post those dimensions? Thanks in advance

Oh no. Reef tanks are a roller coaster for sure. Hope things resolve in a happy fashion.

No, I won’t be using a fleece roller. I used one on my old 250 and it was a pain. It worked super well but was quite the pain to keep running. It eventually died and I just left it off after that. It was the Trigger Platinum sump setup

I run the included nylon filter socks from time to time. They are easy to clean

How is it going now?

I think the damage was 3 lost SPS frags and my snails all went comatose. They weren't dying but all just sat at the bottom of the glass by the sand and didn't move. Algae has taken over a lot of parts in the tank and bubble algae exploded in growth after the accident. I am currently combatting all that but it will be slow and tedious.

The corals that survived have exploded with growth and color in the last couple weeks. Whatever the algae likes, the corals do too LOL
