My mangroves lost over half their leaves after the rehab, but I think they’re rebounding. No more leaves have died, and there are a few new leaves popping out here and there.

One small one looks like it may have died. I want to pull it out, but the pistol shrimp has already dug a bunch of tunnels around the roots, so I’ll leave it. Who knows…maybe it will bounce back.

Thanks for documenting, helpful info to share. I have a mature red mangrove in a 5g bucket, and when I go to transfer it to a display tank later this year, I’m considering just cutting the top part off the bucket and leaving it planted in the bottom half of the bucket to install in the tank.

What’s the overall consensus on pistol shrimp in a mangrove tank? I’m seeing mixed results, some saying they will be fine if you get a small one and others saying they will destroy the roots.

I’ve had a pistol shrimp living among my mangrove roots for a couple of years. When I took the tank apart, the mangroves had massive root structures.

If anything, the tunnels made by the shrimp more easily deliver nutrients in the water to the roots.

Thank you! Do you know there might be a risk of the pistol shrimp messing with root tabs?

Reds growing in sand and soil behind my tank. About 2 years old now from propuguls.

Growing enough looks like I need to add another light soon.
This is insane! I started a mangrove nano tank about 6 months ago from propagules, and have seen no where near this kind of growth. What sand/soil and light are you using? Any tips?

I think its just being in freshwater is the main difference. Its in a pot with sand and a little bit of soil.

I keep the water right above the sand line. I put a light amount of liquid fertilizer in a gallon jug with tap water and use that to water them.
Just a sansi grow bulb off Amazon.

Hi everyone!! I’m brand new to the mangrove world, so please bear with me with my makeshift setup!

I’ve had these red mangrove propagules for about 6 months now. They’re in CaribSea Arag-Alive sand with freshwater. I know I don’t have the ideal lighting or a pump set up yet, so I’m definitely still figuring things out as I go!

I would loveee any tips, advice, or guidance on how to improve their setup and help them really thrive! thank you so much in advance!!

Replant with a layer of organic potting soil beneath the “live” sand; brackish water is better than fresh water Ime. Some flow would benefit to avoid root rot..

What a neat thread. I checked out every tank and link posted here. Thank you to everyone who shared. Now I don't know what to do with my set up. My mangroves are in a 100 gallon rubbermaid refugium. Now I kind of want to set up a spare low boy as the refugium. Not sure how to "plant" these in my current refugium. These are newish plants I put in and just hung a proper light over them. Once I added the light they started shooting new leaves.

Ahh, thank you so much! I will definitely be taking your suggestions! Any pumps/filters you recommend for something like this?

I use this, small and controllable. You can also add more water to make it easier for flow. Some live stock would work too like crabs and snails for brackish water or a fish when flow is added. All adds to the ecosystem…
