Starfish don't have a brain but they must have some type of predator detection. As soon as the shrimp was added the the stars start climbing the glass.

The video is long but is just a snapshot of what I watched while I was doing a water change today.

Beautiful set up. I also used my tractor to move my tank to the house. Love having a tractor!

Well I added all 10 chromis and will probably never see them again. I added them after lights out with just some moon lighting. They swam around for a while then the mingi now affectionately named the meanguy by my Gal chased them into the rocks.
It been 2 days and one or two will venture out when I feed and that's all. I had similar luck when I added a group of anthias to a tank a few years back. They took to the rocks and eventually were never seen again.
I guess a group of free swimming fish are not in the cards 😢

Everything else is going well except I think my naso has taken a liking to leathers. I saw her tugging on my large toadstool and now my smaller toadstools are showing signs of being chewed on around the edges. Such is life in the reefing hobby. She's my oldest fish and a velvet survivor so I'm not about to get rid of her.

I guess I can always sit and look at the reefer 300 if I want to watch coral. This tank is doing so well it's making me nervous and I probably shouldn't even brag it up for fear of it coming to an end. Sorry I'm forever the optimistic 🙃

Not much going on in the 8g. I did add a little powerhead and the sea apple seems to appreciate the extra flow. It was closing up for a day or two at a time and since adding the PH it rarely closes and is feeding almost constantly. I may have mentioned it but I'm dosing phyto every hour 24/7.

PXL_20251021_043327157~2.jpg

I recently started adding freshly hatched brine shrimp to the phyto and my porcelain crab is really digging that.

The 20g is holding its own. I'm having to dose ammonium because of 0 nitrate test results.
The two crocea and derasas are doing well but the maximum won't attach. I've moved it around and even tried it in the SPS tank. It opens and looks happy but won't attach. I have it in a small container with rubble so it will attach or it won't.

I brought the clowns up from the basement and they are doing well. A sixline is the only other fish and it has been fine so far.

Chromis are starting to come out. Was one then two and now 7 out of 10 are out. I'm feeding using the mixing tube from the plank feeder I bought. I would have bought just that part instead of the whole feeder but I wasn't really sure how the system actual worked until I saw. I know there's YouTube but I'm weird and for some odd reason have an aversion to YouTube 🤪 and only use it so i can link videos here.

I have the feed tube mounted on the end ao I can just dump food in. Its working well dispencing small food for the chromis that the tangs aren't too interested in.

Well another failure to report.
I have to say this hobby is starting to not be fun. Male CBB dies mysteriously after 14 months and now 2 month later the female is dead after 3½ years. Eating like a pig last night and dead this morning without a mark on the body and had no other fish that even gave her a second look.

Sorry to hear that, always tough to lose a fish that’s been around a while.

I’d say that neither of these are a failure, though. I’m sure the attrition rate of reef fish is much higher out in the wild, and if your fish are making it 12+ months, you’re doing them justice. Sometimes animals die despite nothing being done wrong.

That's tragic! I'm sorry about your CBBs (but glad the RIP wasn't YOU). No signs of aggression?

This is the third time I've started a build thread so we'll see if I succeed. The first one my badge disappeared so I did another and sure enough my badge disappeared again. I didn't bother restoring the badges because I figured it was punishment for me being so poor at updating the threads :thinking-face: I'll try to do better this time but no promises ;) If this one disappears I'll take that as a sign.

New Tank is a Waterbox LX 330.7 I was going to go custom with a basement sump but decided I really didn't feel like doing the plumbing plus I'm getting tired of running up and down the stairs, sump is currently in the basement. I went with Waterbox because I was able to get the exact size I wanted. I really wanted at least 7ft of length and especially wanted the 30 inch front to back depth. The total height is more than I wanted but it was compromise or go full custom.

I want to keep my rodi storage and mixing station in the basement so figuring out how to keep that there and get water to the first floor will be part of the build. I'll be transferring most of the stuff from my 180g to the new tank. I'll do a full equipment list later.

Current tank that will be replaced

In with the stand. I was able to use the tractor to get it level with the entry way and slide it into the house and up onto a couple of furniture dollies. Rolled it into position and lifted it off. Easy peasy.

Time for the sump. Did it the same as the stand, up and in. Man I love the salesman that suggested adding the forks when I bought the tractor.

We set the tank today but didn't get pics. I had to help get it in and my Gal stayed in the bedroom. She said she couldn't stand to watch :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing: I hired a moving company to move the tank. First time in my life I've paid anyone to move anything. It was hard as I'm a do it yourself and usually do it alone kind of guy. I wish I would have hired laborers and ran the job myself. I wanted to bring it in the same as the stand and sump using the tractor sliding it in onto dollies then roll it to the stand and lift it on. Boss man wanted to lift into the house and it took all 5 of them and myself to do it. 604lbs ya I would have opted for the tractor but they were in charge. The door opening was 31" and tank 29.5" so it was tight but we made it in unscathed and up onto the stand. My arms are sore today.
PXL_20240223_145314731.jpg

After everyone left my Gal came out. Her first statement "wow it's big" :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing: It is big and makes the 180g look small. It's amazing how much difference the extra 6" of depth makes. I'm looking forward to scaping this. The tangs are gonna love the extra swim space.

Sump is in the stand now onto plumbing. You can see the two electrical outlets I added. I ran a dedicated circuit on its own breaker and attached the outlets to the wall, one outside on the end toward the corner and the second where I can reach it from inside the stand.
PXL_20240223_202035583.jpg

Leveled. I used a 4ft bubble level but really didn't have 100% confidence as the bubbles are a little hard for me to see. I added about 3/4" of tap water and checked the waterline. Nice and level.

PXL_20240223_203924156.jpg

Plumbing in and doors are on.
Next up to get lumber and build a beam and shore up the joists.
The tank is sitting perpendicular to the floor joists and the back almost on top of the house center beam. It would probably be fine but I already have two extra pole jacks so I'm going to build and run a support beam parallel to the center beam about 24" away which will give plenty of support I think.
More to follow.

Just a video before the year end. Not much to report. NO3 is runing 25ish and PO4 has settled in around 0.2 - 0.4 after running a few batches of rowaphos in a reactor. Doing 25g weekly water changes and dosing 15ml if ESV 2 part to keep alk 8.5 ish dkH.
I built a new PC and have been getting back into gaming now that winter is here. It's been 10 years since I built a rig so it was a good time. Tech sure has come a long way in 10 years. My builds used to be a rats nest of wires like my tanks. Now the only cables needed are for mother board, GPU, and fans so I was able to build one I'm not embarrassed to show. I added a 34" curved screen monitor and am running games at 3440 x 1440 and loving it.
