I have had Eric Bornemans book called Aquarium Corals Selection, Husbandry and Natural History for quite some years and its still the book to go to IMO.

He has another book titled A practical Guide to Corals For The Reef Aquarium.
I never bought that book until today when I found one on the UK eBay for less than £12 ( about $15I guess) delivered and it's the hardback version at that. I understand there is also a softback one.
The book is described as in very good condition and as I have bought from them before I am confident it will be near as good as new.

I have a number of books from Sprung Theil and others. Sure the net is a source of knowledge but give me a good old hard copy book any day.

Here is the frontal cover of both books. If you were looking at just one book to have then I have no hesitation in recommending Aquarium Corals Slection, Husbandry and Natural History as the book. Wonderful book in my opinion and written in a way we can all understand. I suspect the new one when it comes will be equally as good given the reviews it's had.

Oddly or not, after being MIA from reefing for the last 15 years, I think Eric has been seen at a few reef events recently. He was friends with Anthony (Calfo) and we got to spend some time with him when we hosted MACNA back in 2007 or whenever it was.

I was wondering what had happened to Eric as I hadn't heard from him for years. Have you heard of him recently? If so do you know wgat ge is doing on the reefing front or otherwise?

I can second any book Borneman writes. I have meant him twice, he is a gentleman & a scholar.
As a member of MARSH we toured his extensive home aquarium in Houston. And once after attending a marine aquarium conference in Pittsburgh, Eric was on the return flight to Houston and we had a pleasant conversation.

That must have been the icing on the cake and such a privilege.

Bean,
I was at a conference in Pittsburgh with Boreneman & Calfo. Dana Riddle was there as well. They did a Q & A session together and later, I sat at the guest table with Calfo who had two security guards with him. Glad to hear that both are getting back into reef hobby events.

Interesting, when was that?

Unfortunately, as is often the case, life gets in the they way of social engagement, even if it is on the todo list. I have not talked to Anthony in quite some time. None of us really participate in the club anymore and don't make the effort to get together. I suppose I will make a note on the todo list to try harder...

You can do a bit of searching, no need to drag it out here. I have not talked to him in ~15 years and don't know what he spent the interim doing. I suppose that too warrants a call to mutual friends.

Am not stupid I have tried Google and nothing comes up. What am I supposed to be "dragging it out here"?
Seems like you know something about him I can't find on the net. Not interested in tickle tackle or unsavoury stuff which your posts wiffs of. just his involvement in the hobby
All I can find is his book and some things he wrote years ago.
Thanks.

I have the second book shown, it is awesome and one of my favorites. Unfortunately, many now claim the information is outdated and I could not disagree more. Most hobbyists today get there information from the web; which is filled with hype, myth, and outright false information.

I agree, must be a minefield for any newbie coming into the hobby. So much misinformation and misleading at the best. I also enjoy Erics style of writting, a breath of fresh air in an often over complicated hobby.

It is of my opinion that new hobbyist do not read printed material anymore, and prefer digital. Times change and social media mixed in with end state vs the journey are the norm.

Most of us with any length of time or pre-date forums met up face to face at clubs, or talks, and read books. USENET provided a bit more virtual interaction as did the subsequent forums and BBS but at the end of the day we still consumed printed material.

Did not mean to get on a small soapbox. Good book btw and ty for sharing your thoughts on it.

Am 75 now so was brought up on books. I still read from the net of course, well I am on here other forums and not just for reefkeeping. There is still value in books apart from fiction I believe just not what there was or making them financially viable anymore unfortunately.

I didn't intend to imply you were stupid. I don't know what Eric's involvement in the hobby has been since 2011 or so and had simply hoped to avoid any conversation about unsavory details of why there was an absence.

Atoll,
A favorite Eric’s quote “If someone tells you their way is the only way to run a reef tank;
run from them”.

When I first started, aside from meeting up with other reefers or whatever information you could get from the LFS, books were the only place to get any of this information. I have both of those books and quite a few other others. I have to dust them off and check them out. It’s been quite a few years since I look at them.

Yes that was where we got all of our information from and when LFS has personnel that had knowledge . So much of this hobby has changed from when those books were written.

I have been in the hobby for 55 years, while the hobby culture may have changed, the science has not changed.

Yes, we do know more about the science now and for that reason, I am “old school”.

Well you got me by 20years but just think 15 years ago would you have ever thought about adding phosphate to your tank . The science has changed on it with better understanding what the corals need .
