Well you got me by 20years but just think 15 years ago would you have ever thought about adding phosphate to your tank . The science has changed on it with better understanding what the corals need .
Here is a picture from 2011 of me doing just that, however the levels and reasons people are doing it today are wrong, foolish, and misguided. The science nor understanding has not changed only how people falsely interpret it. J Sprung has it well documented in his book published in 1994.

Then again we never really cared about phosphates until a kit was created to test for it. There are a few of us who keep tanks with phosphates over 1.0 ppm.

Yes that was where we got all of our information from and when LFS has personnel that had knowledge . So much of this hobby has changed from when those books were written.
In my opinion its gotten too complicated.

I will have to add these to my list of reefing books to aquire. I will say, sometimes buying used you get good surprises. I bought a copy of Sprung's book The Reef Aquarium Vol 1 that was listed as possibly having writing in it. Turns out that writing is actually a signed copy!!!

Wow, I wasn't aware he had a second book!!

I agree, must be a minefield for any newbie coming into the hobby. So much misinformation and misleading at the best. I also enjoy Erics style of writting, a breath of fresh air in an often over complicated hobby.

It is of my opinion that new hobbyist do not read printed material anymore, and prefer digital.

I guess this explains why my thread bout reef books was moved to the Lounge at some point.

Sign of the times? LOL

(@revhtree: I have no idea when/how it was placed there. Can my book thread (please) be moved back to the most appropriate reef-oriented forum instead of the lounge? Beginners... or Discussion... I would guess.)

Bean,
I was at a conference in Pittsburgh with Boreneman & Calfo. Dana Riddle was there as well. They did a Q & A session together and later, I sat at the guest table with Calfo who had two security guards with him. Glad to hear that both are getting back into reef hobby events.
Any idea why the security guards?!?

Not really. Anythony’s career was at a high point and I guess he had the money. I had previous contact with Anthony as he advised me on growing coral in a greenhouse and we had connected at a previous MACNA event in Dallas, where I also had breakfast with Julian Sprung, who is also a gentleman and a scholar.

Now that it resonates, I will message him and see if he remembers me. Probably not, as it was almost 30 years ago.

PS: I just sent Anthony a message on FB. We shall see if he responds.

Side question: Anyone have the 411 on the (lead) co-author of the book, Mr. Puterbaugh?

I have had Eric Bornemans book called Aquarium Corals Selection, Husbandry and Natural History for quite some years and its still the book to go to IMO.
Atoll, just read my book again with one eye closed and your left hand in a bowl of salt water. It will seem better than Eric's book. 😎

Only if you allow it to be.
I dont. The only "modern" equipment I use is an ATO. I was mostly referring to all the useless tech and gadgets being marketed as the next best thing.

I have had Eric Bornemans book called Aquarium Corals Selection, Husbandry and Natural History for quite some years and its still the book to go to IMO.

He has another book titled A practical Guide to Corals For The Reef Aquarium.
I never bought that book until today when I found one on the UK eBay for less than £12 ( about $15I guess) delivered and it's the hardback version at that. I understand there is also a softback one.
The book is described as in very good condition and as I have bought from them before I am confident it will be near as good as new.

I have a number of books from Sprung Theil and others. Sure the net is a source of knowledge but give me a good old hard copy book any day.

Here is the frontal cover of both books. If you were looking at just one book to have then I have no hesitation in recommending Aquarium Corals Slection, Husbandry and Natural History as the book. Wonderful book in my opinion and written in a way we can all understand. I suspect the new one when it comes will be equally as good given the reviews it's had.

I have both those books. The second book you mention (A practical guide to corals) was actually published first, in 1996 vs 2001 for the book you already have (Aquarium Corals). I agree that the 2001 book is a great book; it is still my go to coral book as well. It is bigger, more comprehensive and much better than the earlier one IMO. The earlier book contains basic information about a limited number of corals and is very thin.

I also really like Scott Michael's 5-book series on Reef Fishes.

I also have his first book and I love it. I was lucky to find it at a used bookstore. It sits on my coffee table and is full of great pictures.
Information wise; the equipment section is quite outdated but it has taught me about coral biology and classification. I know of at least one instance where the same picture is used to depict two different genera of corals.
As far as information for actually caring for corals (dosing, placement, etc.) the forums have been my go-to source.

Am not stupid I have tried Google and nothing comes up. What am I supposed to be "dragging it out here"?
Seems like you know something about him I can't find on the net. Not interested in tickle tackle or unsavoury stuff which your posts wiffs of. just his involvement in the hobby
All I can find is his book and some things he wrote years ago.
Thanks.
Here you go I found it for you:

Eric Borneman used to moderate the coral section at MarineDepot's forum on their website (2007ish). His approach to reefkeeping was not popular with the cool kids at the time, he liked to use 6500 and 10k lighting to show coral's true colors, and he was also a big promoter of deep oolitic sandbeds with seagrass as a biological resource. He was a coral researcher at UCLA if I'm not mistaken.

Good for him to remain out of the limelight, one can still be an expert at their craft without the need to be an "influencer".

All of the readers under the age of 50 are asking themselves what the heck is limelight? Google it.

I used to chat with him on the marine depot forum that no longer exists. I had a tank for 9 years trying to replicate some of his writings. I had the borneman surges on top of my tank ( flush microfauna do display). I recently went to carleson surges with full refugium flushing into the display tank on my latest 10' tank upgrade. This was one of his ideas.
