I just got a first gen Maxspect R420r 27" for $140. Good deal or bad buy? Also what are recommended settings on the % over a 40 breeder with softies/lps.

had 3 of those over my 180 for a while. My opinion is: they are old. They are known to have an issue with blue channel failing. Parts are unavailable. After about 5-6 years of running them, I realized the color spectrum changed and were causing my tank to grow GHA. They would always come back after a 3 days black out (GHA disappeared after a few weeks, when I swapped them for brand new lights). But they did make my corals grows. softies, LPS and SPS. But, for the price, I think you would be better with something else (maybe a brand new blackbox? I bought 4 popblooms RS90 to replace those, and I am not disappointed at all)

Well the R420r came today. It looks good, used but good. Everything works. Im replacing an old Reef breeders photon 24. The only thing I notice is the R420r does not look as bright as the Photon did at the same settings. I was running the Photon at 5% White 40% Blue, I put those same settings into the R420r, and its not as bright. Thoughts? Tank is a 40 breeder with just softies/leathers. I mean I dont mind the look of it not being as bright, its more of a cooler blue then the old Photon, but I just wondering if the % will equal to the same. Leathers, gsp, and shrooms were growing under the Photon. I just always wanted a R420r and could never afford one when they came out. When I seen that deal I had to grab it up.

When to mix up fish meal: When was the last time you tried a different brand of food for your reef?
