Necessary to Rinse in RODI?

I dump the muck from my skimmer cap every couple days. There’s always a bunch stinky residue on surfaces, so if I’m not pressed for time I usually also wipe that off with my fingers or the old toothbrush that has been designated to aquarium purposes. Some days I rinse the skimmer cap in RODI before putting it back on, and sometimes I do not, knowing there are “droplets” of untreated city tap water that will get into my system (70gal display, 25gal sump).

My question is a matter of practicality: is the RODI rinse actually necessary? Does everyone take that extra step?

Will years of “couple drops today” add up to a copper problem in the long run?

Does everyone do take precaution and perform the obligatory RODI rinse when you clean the skimmer cup, or do you just put it back on after cleaning in the bathroom sink?

Thanks!

You guys are cleaning your skimmer cups !!?!
When I ran a skimmer this was a necessity. If I did not do this the living room would start to smell like a shallow tidepool, which was not wife approved.

I probably haven’t cleaned mine in 6 months 🤪
Mine gets caked up especially at neck at least monthly and the neck going into cup gets pretty slimy

Mine is caked up, but I guess I don’t do often deep cleans because I assumed
Some of that stuff was good because of the “break in period” skimmers need to go through.

Nope. I clean the skimmer cup in the sink with a sponge, then I put the cup back on the skimmer. The trace of water is no issue at all. I never waste time drying it or rinsing in RO/DI. It’s completely unnecessary.
