Overrated fish

There are plenty of highly popular fish in the trade, some people like an oddity or something rare just because it's not something that you see regularly. There are other fish that you seem to see in almost every tank you look at. I'm interested to know what fish people think are overrated. That is, you think they are far more popular than you think they deserve to be and wouldn't want to own if someone was willing to give you one free (assuming it wasn't due to compatibility or size issues).

For me, yellow tangs and foxfaces are top of the list. They're probably both poplar for the same reasons, bright yellow colour and good algae eaters. I've just never seen the appeal. I love tangs and rabbitfishes, I'd have one (or more) of each in any reef tank I own provided they were big enough, but I just can't get on board with these 2 fish.

Orange or pink skunk clowns are underrated. They are sweet, stay small and pretty. Mine took to each other and to the anemone as if they'd been together since birth.

Why? Does your pistol shrimp pick at the corals? My wife is obsessed with them..should I be worried to have 2 in our tank?

I've got two fire fishes so far, one was regular pink one and the other is Helfrichi. They always on the fron of the tank. Yes they hide when frightened but only for a bit and I don't see them getting frightened that easily tho. I see them all the time

Mine were hiding a lot, even disappeared for 3 months. Since they decided to come out of hiding, they are always on the front of the tank. The speed with which the hide is amazing to see, even though they are so fast, I do not really see it happening. But now they come back in a few minutes, and stay out.

Chromis. The uronema infested rat of the marine aquarium hobby. And they look like a freshwater fish, so out of place IMO.

Disagree about the Chromis. I have 7 for at least 5 years. They put a lot of animation in the tank, are constantly spawning, and in chasing the fish away from their eggs, keep the action interesting. Under the blue light, they are iridescent and very pretty.

Clowns are scary.

To add to the list, puffers. They are common in the lfs here, but a poor community fish that requires extra effort and cost to feed.

Pygmy angels ugly?? No way. Eiblis angel is beautiful, easy to keep, and full of personality. When my hubby waves at it, it wiggles back and forth.

Anthias have been on this list for years .

I never cared for watchman goby/pistol shrimp pairs. Just feel like it’s too ordinary and I don’t get any enjoyment out of it. Funnily enough I love clowns.

I just go for fish with colour and personality that aren’t too aggressive.

Orange spot diamond goby. Sure they look great and keep the sand clean. But you can't keep anything on your sand unless you want it buried. Had to give mine away.
