Oh boy. So sorry to see this.

I error on the side of caution on these situations. The is really a question for the manufacturer. If this was one of our tanks, we would replace it. I cant sleep at night if I share go for it and set it up in your living room and really have no idea what the outcome will be. with that said, I wouldnt use it and contact the manufacturer.

Joe sorry for the late response, I did not se your message until right now, unfortunately I can't call the company due to it being a second hand buy. I knew what I was getting into when I purchased it from the original owner he received the tank from waterbox in this condition, luckily it'll be in my garage/man cave, I guess the best thing I could do is take the advice from others and maybe silicone a piece of glass into that corner to strengthen that side with the chip, I was thinking maybe trying to fill it up with just regular tap water and let it sit for a few months maybe? If its possible I want to keep the original glass with the waterbox logo on it , in your opinion do you think if it was to fail would it just form a leak? Or do you think it would bust with water going everywhere?

I think you’ll be fine honestly… I had a little glass sump with the bottom like that taken out and I ran it for a long time and had zero issues.. there’s always a risk but hey! I like to gamble haha!

You’re telling me if someone bought a tank from you and they miss handled it and chipped it, or damaged it, you would replace the whole tank at your cost??? Wow, I have a hard time believing that one lol. I mean this is an unprecedented warranty claim especially at this scale.

He received it from Waterbox with a big 2 inch chip out of it and proceeds to sell it?(unless Waterbox replaced the tank due to shipping damage & he got to keep the damaged one) There has to be more to the story. If it was damaged during shipping and Waterbox told him to go pound sand that’s a pretty bold move on Waterbox’s behalf unless it was previous owners doing and tried to hang Waterbox out to dry for his mishandling. Can you clarify the happenings OP? Either way I don’t know why you would wanna get involved with a tank like this and research a possible fix AFTER already buying it. When and if it goes bad, it’s gonna be bad, totally unpredictable. Even if it turns up a casual leak after fixing, having to transfer everything and get rid of this thing and save what money you have invested inside the tank is gonna be a major pain in the rear. On the other hand, you could patch it and it could stand to hold water for five years but there again I don’t like to gamble in Vegas either. But best of luck in your venture Op, for me it’d be a hard pass lol

Yeah so marco just to give you more insight of what happened, im the second hand buyer of this tank, the original owner bought this tank from waterbox, you have to personally pick up the tank from your local fedex or ups i dont remember which one it was, it's your responsibility to inspect the tank before taking it from FedEx, the tank had a chip when he inspected it so he filed a claim with waterbox they told him to take the tank home and they would send him a new tank in about a week, the owner hired a moving company to transport and install the set up for him already, he didn't have anywhere to store the tank at his house so he set it up in the tanks permanent location where the future new tank would be going, he listed the tank for sell and explained the situation, well a week passed and he needed to get the chipped tank out of the way for he could install the new tank that came in. He messaged me and offered a price that was too good for me to pass up so I pulled the trigger and bought it from him, i looked up solutions and asked around for others opinions BEFORE I actually decided to go through the "hassle" of transporting this tank, i got alot more positive feedback from regular hobbyist and professional glass installers than I did negative feedback im just trying to get any information possible before i get started on this tank build, in return i have heard some good feedback and ideas from others, im a firm believer that a closed mouth dont get fed, i hope for a good outcome and maybe this feed will help others in the future as well, I'll be sure to post the final outcome when I fill it up someday, as far as the hassle goes it's really not that big of a deal I work construction offshore on oilrigs it's pretty common to lift 800+lbs manually with just 2-4 people, I called a few buddy's and we moved it with no problem. So it really wasn't any Hassle so far, considering this set up would costs over $10,000 new it was well worth the gamble if it turned out that it leaks or cracks i could replace the front glass and still be way ahead on cost plus itll be in a garage on concrete anyways concrete dries up pretty fast it could use a pretty gopd mopping anywhay , of course i didn't get the stand or sump with it but for what I paid it was a steal, and on the plus side the professional moving company actually transported it onto my moving trailer at the original owners house I only had to carry it about 15 feet once i got home with it lol

I appreciate you taking the time and laying out the whole backstory. I always find these ventures Interesting and how they come to fruition. Been in construction/mechanics my whole life and I understand the spirit of not being afraid to tackle anything, but as I get older my risk mitigation becomes more and more pronounced, and just not being a gambler at heart lol. It’s one of those things it could be a nothing burger for years or it could be a real bad day. I’m just one of those people that it would sit on my conscience forever, but if you got the tank for a song, why not. It does amaze me that Waterbox would not want it back to dispose of it themselves instead of having it circulate or having the previous owner profit off it. I received a 36 gal acrylic sump damaged and they wanted it back lol. Definitely keep a thread going on it. Like I said, best of luck and hopefully it all works out and I appreciate your time on the explanation, all makes sense now lol

Yes sir! I'm surprised they don't request the tank back as well, iguess with the cost of shipping, manual labor cost for glass replacement, and taking a chance of another piece of glass having potential strain from the impact that chipped the front glass its better to just wash their hands with it instead of replacing the glass and selling it to another customer and being out 2 tanks now, to an average Joe like us it's hard to just let things go like thatbut to a multimillion dollar business they probably make more money a day just on filter socks

Hi there @Marco_99

at the time of my response, I thought this occurred during shipping.

if damage occurs during shipping, we replace it for sure.

if damage occurs after delivery, we typically extend a discount. We want to help turn a tough situation in to a better situation as to move forward and enjoy the hobby.

Hope this makes sense.

all good. Tough question. hard to definitively answer your question without actually touching the tank and seeing it first hand. so I have to error on the side of caution and say dont use it. Sorry.

Probably because they make the tanks in China , so they have no way to repair them in USA

Yeah it makes sense now especially after he laid out the whole story. I didn’t think you caught the second hand purchase part but I wasn’t for sure. I appreciate the insight on such situations.
