This would be my third tank overall. I started with a 60 cube, upgraded to a 120 and got a 180 on a killer deal. I just recently moved out of state and brought the 120 and 180 with dual overflow. Going to sell my 120 and get a different tank, hopefully the red sea peninsula tank. But for right now I am going to set up the 180.

When I bought the 180 it came with everything the guy had since he was moving out of country. So here is a list of items I will be using with the 180 system:
180 dual overflow tank
Fluval SP6
Trigger Emerald 39 sump
Reef Octopus Classic 8" Skimmer
Tunze ATO

For lighting I can use the two black boxes it came with or use my AP700 that I won in a raffle, kinda leaning to the AP700. I also have some plywood stained underneath the tank for weight distribution and in where the sump is. So far I have the stand made, and my water changing station set up. Unfortunately my water PSI isn't good enough to start making RO/DI water, so while I wait for that I'm going to plumb my tank but I have a couple questions.

1. My return pump (fluval SP6) has return lines that are 1 1/4". I have colored plumbing that is 1", I've read that your overflow plumbing should match what your return pump lines are. Will there be an issue with me reducing the return lines to 1" and keep my plumbing for the tank 1"?

2) The overflow method I would really like to go for is the bean animal method. I know that the method is supposed to a C2C drain like symptom. I was thinking in one overflow have the full siphon and emergency line and in the other overflow have the wet siphon with the return line. Will this work essentially and still have quiet plumbing into the sump? I will have gate valves beneath them of course, just curious if I'm going to have to constantly fine tune one or if I'm setting my self up for failure later on. Or should I just go with what I've seen around and just do dual herbie method with return line over the back?

Feel free to ask questions about my build or follow along.

So thinking about putting 2/3 manifolds on my return line. Thinking of just T-ing off from it with true union ball valves, what are peoples thoughts on this?

So with my overflow I decided to go dual Herbie method with return line over the top. Do I necessarily need to have a trickle down the two emergency lines? If I decide to do one trickle and not the other doesn’t that make it a bean animal? Also I’m not doing the 90’s on the top just putting strainers over them, is there a solid reason why people do 90’s that I should consider doing instead?

Strainers are fine, alot of people with external overflows use the 90s since there is no way to have fish get sucked into them. The elbows generally stay clearer from larger pieces of detritus or snails.
You could definitely trickle one and not the other.

Build is on hold for a little bit until I can figure out my issue with my RODI, have another thread going for that. Also waiting for more plumbing items to come in so I can finish the tank.

Got my RO/DI system all figured out and running.

Was working on my plumbing for the tank and glued the wrong end of a union to some glued 90’s. They were my last 90’s so have to get more. Going to try and progress in other areas.[/ATTACH]

I did the same thing and clocked my last two 90's wrong when doing my plumbing. I THOUGHT I had plenty of extras.

Where did you get your steal stand from? I love it. I need one for my new 180. I don't wanna do wood anymore.

Well I got my plumbing pretty much all set and I’m pretty proud of it, I think it looks clean too. I think plumbing and I have a love hate relationship. This plumbing took me a while to do with some mess ups here and there. I’m glad I had more parts otw so I didn’t have to wait too long to finish. There might be room for improvement but I’m happy with the direction I took with it and how it laid out.

Only thing to do on it is put an cap on and secure the return line to the stand. I was thinking of maybe using shims with clamps and zip ties that have the hole drilled out on it so you can mount the ties down. Anyone have any other recommendations on securing the plumbing?

Had to do some yard work and errands today so I wasn’t able to get the plumbing water tested. Going to start that tomorrow morning. I was able to secure the plumbing, not the cleanest option I think but it got the job done. I also cut covers out of some plastic, that I got from a fellow reefer who makes frags racks out of them, and made covers for the overflows.

I’m still kinda undetermined in what’s going in the tank. This is my only tank now. Got rid of the other tanks before we moved to OKC and kept this one.
