If you want to get fish tomorrow, I would look into getting a bottle of prime and a bottled bacteria product.
Indeed, this filter needs to have the nitrogen cycle established prior to adding fishes, just like you would a full blown reef system. Treat it no different, in fact you'll want to watch parameters closer as they can shift faster. If you must jump start the cycling process I've personally had great success using Dr. Tim's one and only.

Don't rush it... the animals and your wallet will thank you for being patient (as hard as that can be) ;)

I'm actually using the water from my DT, and just added maybe 20% fresh water. So I thought I was good to go since it was from the DT

I'd add an ammonia alert, as it helps knowing when ur filtration is struggling due to medication or high fish load.
Always syphon uneaten food and be ready for water changes as many fish are lost due to ammonia spikes in Quarantine tanks.

This won't establish beneficial bacteria in your filter. I actually prefer to use fresh saltwater as there might be ailments present in your display that your existing fishes are immune to or have fought off. You'll read a lot both ways (IME), however the merit to using fresh SW is sound IMO.
