Aggressively pruned Black mangrove sump

Very healthy Black Mangrove. Imo and ime, Black Mangroves are more difficult to grow in saltwater aquariums. Red mangroves are more salt tolerant and generally grow better fully submerged. It will be interesting to see if your Red’s will catch the Black? Well done…

Just an update on my Black Mangrove. I drastically pruned my Mangrove about 6 weeks ago. I like it a lot better since it is a lot less rudy. Nice structure and healthy foliage at this time.

Looks great. Anything you do specifically for the mangrove: Including, maybe, testing magnesium or potassium, Dosing anything?

Nope. I almost never test for anything. I use Reefcrystal and change about 50 gal a month in a 420 gal system, so about 10%. Never test for anything other than salinity and temperature. I don't keep much SPS anymore. Just fish and anemones.

This little guy is taking off. I made the mistake of burying the roots in the dsb of my display refugium and lost quite a few mangroves that way. However, this one seems to be doing okay. I was thinking about lifting it up exposing some roots but I’m afraid to mess with it.

You really don’t want to mess with the root. Differnet from Black mangrove, if Red mangrove root is damage in salt water it will die. Having experiences with both species, I think this has to do with the way each species get rid of salt from the plant. Black Mangroves pump salt out at the leaves while Red mangroves plants excluded absorption of salt at the root. Damage roof result in excessive salt and kill the plant.
I think this have to do with the plant mechanism

Mangrove update:

I always forget to post in this thread, but here’s an update on the mangroves in my classroom reef.

Where they started (1/10/24):

Where they are today:

Here’s a shot from under the canopy:

One thing that is noteworthy is that last spring, after the mangroves started to take off and grow branches, I had to fix the lagoon end and there was no way to avoid digging the mangroves out.

That really stalled the growth. I didn’t see any new leaves coming out for more than 3 months after that. But now they’ve rebounded and are starting to crowd each other out.

I’m also loving watching the prop roots form and the pneumatophores popping up through the sand bed.

Greg,

What do you use for lighting over the mangroves? I've set up a Caribbean mangrove biotope in my classroom. 28g lowboy. Currently I have a cheap Amazon grow light over the mangroves and a nicrew over the other side for the corals and such.

Up until recently, I had an Aqua Illumination Hydra 26HD. Now that the canopy has expanded, I put an AI Hydea 52HD over them.

Both lights programmed to the other lights on the reef, so no special plant spectrum.

@OrionN do you have any mangroves in display tanks? Do you have anything to stop fish from jumping on tanks with mangroves in them?

I’m trying to figure out how to manage jumping fish since I want to move my mangroves from the bucket they have been in for a couple years to the display, now that they are adjusted to NSW salinity levels. I only run saltwater tanks with lids though.

Curious what other people do - seems I mostly see people run without tops and just hope their fish don’t jump out. I don’t trust my luck that far.
My mangroves are in the shallow lagoon part. Everything is open, all the way across the tank, even though I could cover the deeper end. I haven’t had anything jump out, but then again, I only have 1 wrasse.

You can see how the mangroves were leaning when I had the smaller AI 26 over them and it was more toward the center of the tank. Now I’ve got the 52 over them, mounted higher, and more toward the right end of the tank.

Hopefully that gets the canopy expanding.

I commented in a really old thread so I’m not sure if I’d get an answer, so since this thread looks more recent, I have a question. I just got my red mangrove plant today and for it to sit properly, I’d have to trim the roots. I looked it up and saw that root trimming wasn’t recommended. Somebody said they just left their mangrove hanging on the side and the roots grew down into the substrate on their own. Any advice?

Dont mess with the roots of a red mangrove. This is how they filter out the salt from the water, damage to the roots will allow salt into the plant and it will die.
