Hello,

I was just curious if anyone could help identify what type of clownfish this is. I’d like to get it a clownfish friend but what to make sure I get one that it should be compatible with.

Thanks

Looks to me like a percula but a white light and more focused photo would help if possible :)

I don’t think it’s Percula bc their eyes are different.

This is just a color or pattern variant of ocellelarus.

I’m not sure. I’ve read that ocellaris have the darker eyes, and that you can count the spines but I can’t get a decent enough picture to count. The fish won’t hold still for me, like it has to swim or something.

Maybe it will just have to remain lonely.

Thanks

Yeah your pic shows complete blackness and Perculas have more orange.

I’ve counted 8 dorsal spines, this photo isn’t completely true as percula can have 9-10 with Occelaris having 10-11.

I've not found eye color to be very accurate. The dorsal spine count can be, but they can also overlap at 10, and the last spine can be tiny and difficult to count. The width of the black is the least accurate was to tell, although ocellaris never has a wide black body band, percula can have a narrow one.

The absolute BEST way to tell these apart is if you know where it was collected. Percula are found south or east of New Guinea and Ocellaris are found west of the tip of New Guinea - their ranges don't overlap.

One way that doesn't work is to compare photos of the two on the Internet - lots of misidentified fish!

So is it also a myth that the two don’t get along?

Yes - they get along well enough to cross breed in aquariums (grin). Getting these two species of clownfish to get along is all about their relative size and sex....once a pair bond is formed, they are fine.

I would definitely say this is an Ocellaris:
