Do fish really touch your soul?

I had a lion fish for about a year...well..I decided to get a tang to go with him since I felt that the tang was large enough that it wouldn't be a risk for the dwarf fuzzy lion. The tang came down with a case of ich and I couldn't catch it to attempt any treatment...so I went and purchased a cleaner shrimp..well that shrimp wouldn't clean and so I purchased a second and that one cleaned and then the first one decided to clean too...

The problem was that I was constantly worrying that the lion was going to eat one of the shrimp and I was feeding the lion large silversides to keep him full...ultimately I decided to take the LION back...the one that had been there originally...he was way easy to catch because he trusted me...

I saw him swim around almost confused by his new surroundings at the fish store...and I was really heart broken about it...it was one of those feelings where your insides just feel horrible like I was doing the wrong thing...but I knew it wasn't right to introduce shrimp that would just end up being lunch for the lion...

Is this silly or what? Anybody else have a story where you got so attached to a fish???

If i my tang........ I might throw my tank out the window. She makes my tank! And her personality is one of a kind :):)

Yes i miss my midas blenny i used to tell him it was time to go to bed and he would back in his hole and i would turn the lights off (special bond) rip little guy

I love it when I give away fish or coral to friends and I get to see them happy...some times I just give them to friend instead of selling, just so I can go check them out....my tank is only a 72 so I have thing outgrow my tank all the time.

Honestly, not really. I'll miss having them when they croak, but I won't cry or be extremely upset for very long. It is the circle of life. For every death there is a new life created.

That's not true at all. A lot of animals go extinct and no new life is created.

I think it hurts me the most when I think about them swimming in a beautiful natural reef....and then someone snatches them away....and then they go into our little half-*** reef......and if they die in our system it really makes me think if it's worth it to take a fish from its home and let it die just to make myself happy..

Now... *fingers crossed* I haven't had a fish die in a LONG time and I would like to think it's because I know what I'm doing now...but I always get stressed out when adding a new fish because I know what used to happen when I started in the hobby.

My tank crashed last week and I lost my Yellow Tang that I have had for 5 years. He was the second fish I ever bought. That was a tough one...

I got a 7-8" majestic angel in the freezer I have yet to get rid of, that was one nice fish with an amazing personality. only had him for a year, but he was by far the centerpiece in my reef and the whole family really loved that fish, found him behind the rocks dead one afternoon around 6 months ago with no reasons as to why.

how do you get extinct from me saying dieing? From reading your post, maybe this isn't the hobby for you.

You talk about the circle of life and for every death there is a life. By taking a ton of animals from the wild we are seriously impacting that system without life going back.

Thanks for saying this isn't the hobby for me...lol

I had a purple tang I sold last year. I had him for about 6 years. I sold him when I broke down my 75 gallon. I didn't want to put him in my temp setup because he wasn't going to make it to the 220 upgrade. He just harassed every fish I put in the tank and even made a pink margin wrasse jump out, and killed a leopard wrasse. Even with that, I was sad when I sold him because he was my first fish when I setup that 75 gallon.

lost my black tang a few months ago and i was like losing a dog (for dog lovers)..very said day

I miss my pair of mated gold striped maroon clowns... for me they were the best looking pair i've ever seen.

i had to give them away because they stressed me out soo much.. they totally reeked havoc in 34g RSM.. rearranging everything making a mess and harassing tank mates..
while they were in the breeder net i kept looking at them.. feeling soo sad for what i'm about to do..
here is a vid i took of them before they guy came to pick them up..

Yeah, Of course. I use to have a pair of ocellaris clownfishes that I was very fond of and stupid me killed them by moving chaeto from a big tank to a smaller tank. I was really upset. I had them for a couple of years and they were doing great.

Yea it always sucks and sucks even more for my wife. She is big time animal lover and would have 100+ animals if she could. She always gets emotional when we loose one. It was really bad when are white spot crab ate her anemone crab.

A month or two ago I found my Mystery wrasse in a filter sock I had soaked in bleach. I was in such a rush on my way to work that I just pulled the filter socks and threw them in a bucket of bleach solution without turning them inside out first to check for any crab hitchhikers. The next morning when I got out of work I found him inside the sock and based on the lack of decomposition of his body, I think he was alive prior to the bleach bath. I really beat myself up about my stupid mistake and surely won't swap socks out in a rush ever again. :squigglemouth:

i would say i get more mad then upset. not sure why. I care for my fish and keep them very healthy. i hand feed. I have 3 very large Tangs. a blonde Naso, sailfin and purple tang. they come right to the top and stick thier head all the way out of the water almost as if to say hello. the naso you can even pet his side and he will lay flat on the bottom of the lagoon while you scratch his side. all that and for some reason i dont form a bond with my fish. I think it because they dont care at all who i am. all they know is i have food.

Its just not like a dog to me. I have a dog and a rabbit and both of them are at my side almost always and seem to care about making me happy. you can tell they care and that to me is what forms the bond. a mutual understanding and love.

PS: yes a rabbit can be trained and act just like a dog. (thought i would put that out there since most people are shocked to see how mine acts lol)
