Stuck a screwdriver through my anemone!

Ok here is the story.

I got one of those rainbow BTA's and I put it in a breeder basket so it would attach to a little chunk of rock and I could move it around. I had every intention of putting this anemone in my frag tank for my clowns. Any way I had some reef buddies coming over and you know the tank has to look good so I put the anemone and his rock down on the sand bed. He didn't move so I said to myself that I would move him later. Well later came and the anemone had hid!

Anyway he eventually moved up and found a spot under a nice big mili and had not caused any problems. After a while of being ok it started stinging my sps. I decided I needed to get him out and I removed the whole rock, which weighed about 40lbs. The plan was to use a hammer and screwdriver to chip rock away around him and then remove him. Well that didnt work! I ended up cutting right through him and when I was done he was in three pieces.

I thought for sure he was dead or going to die as I had cut him and his mouth into 3 pieces. So I put him in the breeder box and went to bed. This was day before yesterday and last night each part of the anemone was expanded and very sticky! What are the chances that it survives do you think?

I'd say pretty good. Those things are weeds, as long as they are healthy to start with. A lot of people are cutting them up with scissors these days with high survival rates. Just give them a week or two, and they should be fine. I'd run or change carbon since they can release some nasty crap when they clone (just to be safe). Move any powerheads out of their reach so the babies don't go wandering into a buzz cut (they love doing that).

RBTAs are pretty resilient, I had one sucked up into a PH filter attachment you know those little plastic things that go on the intake and thought for sure I had killed it. It looked really bad so I just dropped it on the bottom of the tank 2 days later it moved itself out and missing some tentacle's but lived another couple months till I traded it....They can really take some abuse more so then other anemones.

Wow Rev - I'll remember not to tick you off LOL! As others said, so long as it was healthy to start with (which it sounds like it was), you should be fine. Just keep an eye on em, you don't want three of them wandering around your tank.

Hey just an update!

All 3 pieces are alive and well after 9 days!! I can't believe it really. What happened to the theory about tearing a foot and the anemone dies? Man I brutally chopped this one up. One piece was so small that is had 3 tentacles and I thought for sure that piece would die. But they are alive! LOL!

I have cut a few with razors and scissors and havent lost one yet. I also heard a story of one getting chopped in a powerhead, a few months later the owner found tiny nems all over the place.
