holly cow that is way off.
I thought there was a great amazon par meter out there? cant remimber the name off the top of my head tho.

edit: just checked my amazon wish list and I do have the Danoplus in there. must of heard good things about it.
have you checked them same spot but separately? I dont think that will make a difference but it could.
I would love a cheap par meter that worked .
The good one is the VBR Aqua which is around $120 and comes with an updated sensor that matches apogee without any conversions needed

Spot on is a more affordable par meter for use in greenhouses but not sure about underwater use.

No I am not promoting this product. It came to mind when I read this thread. I know more about growing plants than aquariums, and I happened to recall this product and the website which does lots of testing on led quality for grow lights.

Regarding post 7 yes it appears they had a sensor revision, the old needing a multiplier and the new does not need any conversions. myself and at least 4 others since me, have all received the new sensor which does not need the multiplier. I believe they stopped making the old sensor. But you should always double check what sensor you have, so the device is used correctly and safley

Anyway after getting a VbR just make sure to have the new sensor with no multiplier, otherwise you might have been sent very old stock and it would be worth exchanging

He did. Based on that, my VBR arrived yesterday. :)

let us know how it goes Randy, I think it would be very helpful for alot of us reefers that don't have deep pockets.

I got it, but haven't used it yet. Aside from my refugium, i don't yet have lights to try it on. :)

If you play with it, keep in mind the VBR ia more accurate underwater than it is in open air/sunlight

Did you get the sensor that doesn’t need a multiplier ?

I haven't opened it yet since I don't have lights yet. I'll get what I get, and I'll follow up on the appearance to decide on the multiplier issue. :)

No... no you can't "return it in 30 days if you no longer need it"... It being from Amazon changes nothing. The return policy is not a "free rental" agreement.

THAT IS FRAUD

Honestly, having to explain to another adult in public that buying something with the intention of using it and returning it is both unethical and illegal leaves me dumbfounded. No the police are not going to knock in your door and arrest you and there is not much anybody can do... but for goodness sakes, practice basic level of moral and ethical behavior.

Trying to split hairs into "well I no longer need it" does not help.
because amazon practices moral and ethical behaviors..

Maybe not, but stealing from them or abusing their system isn’t right either, same could be said about the more than likely stolen IP used to build the PAR meter coming from the Chinese factory. Best course of action I suppose, would be to not patronize either.

I have it on hand, but since I do not yet have all the rock in the tank, I’m waiting until that is done (next week) before taking any measurements.

I recognize the substantial limitations in such devices that Bean points out. My concern is that I’m using a light setup not often employed by reefers (3 freshwater ai blades plus one coral glow) and I want to have some idea, even if crude, how the lighting intensity compares to the levels others typically are successful with.

Refresh my memory — you chose the fresh water spectrum in an effort to visually reproduce the shallow lagoon lighting effect you are attempting to recreate?

I look forward to the results!

Yes. The perfect spectrum for me would be incident sunlight or maybe a little more blue. I like the look of Seancj’s light here:
